“Made for a Great Experience in Key West”
Reviewed 11 February 2012

My boyfriend and I stayed at La Pensione for 2 nights and we were very satified! We had a room that shared the balcony and took full advantage of it! The room was a decent size and had a king size bed. (Not the most comfortable thing on the planet but it also wasn't the worst) We had french doors opening to the balcony and every morning we opened them and heard the birds and felt the Key breeze while lying in bed!! The B&B is a bit on the old-school side but I think that it added to its charm! The pool was refreshing after walking all day up and down Duval Street, and they have coolers and an ice machine for use at anytime. We ended up getting some stuff to drink, filling our cooler and having a nice balcony party before we went out on the town every night! :)

Breakfast is nothing special..... But thats why you walk to all the amazing places that are all less than a mile away. (I suggest "Blue Heaven"... will change your life!!)

The biggest appeal of La Pensione is how close it is to Duval Street! We walked everywhere and had a great time doing so! If you choose most of the hotels on the Key you might end up having to take a cab everywhere, which doesn't turn me on. Being close to everything was fantastic!!! It made you feel like you were a part of the Keys instead of just a visitor!

When we go back, La Pensione will definitely be an option to go back to!

Room Tip: Room 8 has the Balcony but isn't at the front of the building so the street noise doesn't ca...

My husband and I and another couple stayed 2 nights at this Inn .We had adjoining rooms from the balcony #7 and #8 . The rooms are large enough but have no charm at all. The bathrooms are not well equipped and we were given plastic cups . The balcony is nice but the balcony furniture is old, uncomfortable and cheap. At night, the balcony lights stay on , and even if you close your shutters the light just comes right into the room. We could not sleep ! Very noisy since it is on Truman Ave which is actually the A1A. Breakfast was a joke. We even saw the innkeeper put back into the fridge hard boiled eggs that were sitting on the counter during breakfast and serve them the next vday, The innkeeper was also not very knowledgable about The Keys. The carpets are old and frayed, there are no tv`s and the room is not very comfortable. We tried the swimming pool and rushed out as fast as possible. It had a stinky smell and the steps and bottom were slimy. It looks as if the pool had never been cleaned. For the price that they charge, it is hihgway robbery ! We will never stay there again.

We stayed 2 nights at La Pensione. They have parking space which is good (just off the street, so not completely secure). The room is very dated and really old fashioned with ugly carpets and a very very noisy air con that only has an on/off switch so you can't change the speed, timer or anything even though the buttons are all there. There is no TV in the room.

The bathroom is very old-fashioned with a shower that is like one you would find on a night train (Amtrak style) and the pressure can't be changed so it comes out so strong you feel the water is almost stabbing you in the back.

There were LOTS of ants walking on the sink and the wall nearby, which I found quite gross. We washed them away but they kept coming back.

The breakfast is ok and it's nice to sit on the veranda. Whilst the house looks really nice from the outside, going in feels like going into Norman Bates' house as it's SO old-fashioned and charmless. They could do so much with it but it just has zero charisma, feeling like a budget motel.

The location is fairly good being a 5 min walk to Duval Street so it's quite central to get anywhere on the island.

All in all, would I stay again? definitely not, I'd rather do the Westin by the Marina. Will you enjoy it? if you don't have children, are not into watching TV, don't mind wildlife in your toilet and have little plans or are easily pleased and very concerned about the cost of accommodation, you'll love it. Also if you're a smoker, cos the owner smokes like a chimney. Nice lady, but yeah....

Room Tip: Only room 4 has 2 twin beds. The rest are one big bed.

We stayed here with another couple in the two 2nd story king bed suites with the walkaround balcony facing Truman Street. We brought a car but didn't use it and the parking here was free. The rooms are large, comfortable and very clean, ac and ceiling fans and en suite bathroom/showers. With our rooms having french doors to the balcony terrace, it was perfect for drinks and conversation before venturing out to dinner. Free wifi. The owners are not absentee and the staff are very nice, helpful and knowledgeable about Key West. There is a pool though we didn't use it and bicycles for rent which we did use. The breakfast is continental style with fresh fruit, bagels, muffins, hard and soft boiled eggs, etc., and much appreciated largish waffles. Breakfast is from 8 to 10 but most mornings we were able to get coffee around 7:30 while staff were getting the breakfast ready. The only other nearby option for early coffee or espresso is the wifi cafe near the intersection of Truman and Duval since most other places don't open until 8 or 9! A CVS pharmacy is just up the street and they carry non local papers like the Times and the Journal as well as beers and wines.

Room Tip: Rooms 8 and 9 access the balcony and are the largest. Room 9 is directly on Truman so it gets more...

We stayed here twice in two different rooms and enjoyed it both times. The rooms are comfortable and well-kept. The people who run the place are very nice, and the clientele seems sedate (not the Key West party animals you find in some other hotels). They offer bike rentals that are modestly priced and the bikes are in good condition. Parking is off the street and free, but if you arrive late and the place is full you might not get a spot (9 rooms and 7 spots). Their pool is clean, but we didn't swim in it because we prefer the beach. We looked into a total of five rooms, and four of them were very good, but the one that you enter from the back of the house in the pool area smelled musty. It is however, cheaper than the others. None of the others were musty and none of the rooms smelled of harsh cleaning chemicals or fake perfume air fresheners (a hotel trend that we hate!). Overall, we enjoyed this place and it was cheaper than some of the other B&Bs nearby. Breakfast was pretty good too.

Room Tip: The front room that faces Truman Street has a comfortable bed but gets street lights and traffic no...
