“Great for large groups”

From booking to our stay everything was flawless. The house is amazing for large groups and centrally located one block off Duval. The home is beautifully appointed and the outside space is where you will spend your time. Pool and out door area easily accomodated all 14 of us. All bedrooms have their own baths which is a plus when getting ready. Would bring ear plugs as the fire house is right down the street but on the plus side Sara Beth's is across the street (go for breakfast). Smoke detector went off on night and maintenance arrive right away to fix it. From start to finish this was a amazing vacation.

“Great stay!”
Reviewed 4 July 2016 for a stay in June 2016

We had 7 couples and 2 singles for 16 people total. There was plenty of room for everyone. Upon arrival we found the house to be in very good condition, clean, and stocked with towels, paper goods, dishes, etc. There are 2 pair of w/d which is convenient for pool towels! The set up for the house is a little odd in some instances but to be expected when converting a 19th century home for modern use. All of the bathrooms have been redone and are in very good condition. The ground floor has 2 bedrooms with one having a bath that is outside the bedroom. The other bedroom has an attached bath inside the room but has a door to the dining area which some would consider using as a pool bath. We all just agreed that bath would not be used as a common bath and everyone used their own baths when all together in the house or around the pool. The second floor had 4 bedrooms with their own baths. The front bedroom has a spiral staircase to the 3rd floor loft which is the only interior access for the 3rd floor. So potentially you could have the people on the 3rd floor going through your room to get there. However if the exterior stairs are used then there is private access for everyone. The 3rd floor is a loft apartment. There are 2 convertible trundle beds but it is open with double French doors blocking off one of the beds. I'd either limit the space to a couple or a family or if its 2 couples they ought to know each other pretty well and not worry about privacy!!! The pool was large (and deep so the water didn't get too warm and was thus refreshing). The property is in a great location just a block off of Duval Street. Everything is walking distance (Sloppy Joes, Southernmost point, Hemingway house, Mallory Square, Mel Fischer's museum, etc.). The house is big enough that people could have some privacy and then easily come back together in the kitchen, dining, exterior pool deck area. We stayed for 3 nights and just had a great time. I would recommend bringing ear plugs however as the local rooster crows pretty often but you'd get that anywhere in this part of Key West!!! We'd definitely return.

Liked best: The pool and back deck area. Location.
Liked least: The rooster crowing at all hours of the night! But you'd get that anywhere in Key West.

“Dream Vacation”

Our experience in Key West, at the Grande Dame and with VHKW was just incredible. From the moment we arrived, we felt like we were in paradise. The house had all of the charm and character of an historic residence, but included all of the modern amenities. The proximity to everything could not be beat, the pool was an absolute dream, and the comforts of the home both let us relax, but also never let us forget that we were on vacation somewhere special. There were a few questions we had along the way, and VHKW's customer service was attentive and helpful. This vacation will go down in history with our entire family as one of the best.

“needs work”
Reviewed 21 April 2015 for a stay in September 2013

the mattress,s are worn out and uncomfortable. for the price i would hope every bedroom would have a tv. you have to walk through others bedrooms to get to yours which means no privacy. kitchen and dining area are tiny for large group. as expensive as it is now to fly to key west, its not of great value to spend this kind of money in low season and end up with motel 6.

We are very sorry this customer was disappointed in their accommodations. We appreciate the feedback however, all bedrooms are private as there is an external staircase that can be used to enter the second and third floor.
The home was refreshed at the end of August 2015.

“Plenty of space and no complaints.”
Reviewed 16 December 2014 for a stay in December 2014

We stayed here as a large group on a birthday getaway in December. We had both houses rented for a total of 11 bedrooms and 11 bathrooms. The fact that every bedroom comes with it's own bath is a huge selling point. It allows for privacy for everyone in the house. It was a bonus that all of those bathrooms looked recently updated.
The main house has two ground floor bedrooms, one in the front of the house just off the formal living room and another off of a sitting room near the kitchen. The bedroom in the front of the house was a good size, but was a little noisy at night because of the street and while it does have it's own bathroom, it is not attached. The second bedroom was smaller than the first, but had a large bathroom attached that provided more than enough space. The only downside to this room is the noise from the kitchen can filter in early in the morning.
On the second floor there were four more bedrooms. There was a very large bedroom in the front of the house that was the largest in the complex. The bathroom that was with this bedroom was small, but sufficient. This room also has a spiral staircase up to the 3rd floor in it, although the 3rd floor could also be accessed from the outdoor stairs. Similar to the first bedroom, this bedroom picks up some noise from the street out front. Across the hall from this bedroom was a smaller bedroom that didn't have much room to move around. The lighting was a little lacking in the room also, but everything needed was provided. There were two dressers in this room which seemed redundant and removing one could open the room up a little. The bathroom associated with this bedroom was just outside the backdoor of the room. The bathroom was small, but nice. this bedroom has a door at the top of the stairs and also a backdoor that provides access to the bathroom and the balcony. Also off the balcony was a large bedroom with doors directly opening out for a view of the pool below. This bedroom's bath was located in the out hall like the previous bedroom, but was spacious and included a double vanity and double shower (two shower heads). This is the bedroom that I would call the master. Just off the hallway from the master bath was the fourth bedroom. It was similar in size to the second bedroom on the first floor. No wasted space, but enough room to move around. Its bathroom was attached. This room also had a door to the inner stairwell.
The third floor was very large and self-sufficient. It had its own kitchen, bathroom, and living area. The only downside to this room was the lack of a true bed. It had a trundle/day bed, but no true stand alone bed. It also had a balcony on the back that could be accessed from the ground.
The kitchen in the main house was updated and had newer stainless appliances and granite counter tops. There were plenty of dishes, glasses, mugs, etc. Just outside the kitchen was the back patio that overlooked the pool. This is where we spent most of our time. There was plenty of seating and it provided shade. You will get buzzed by airplanes regularly, but it's a small island, so I'm sure that's the case almost everywhere. The pool is good size for the island and is also heated for the cooler time of the year. There was also a grill in the pool area and plenty of chairs/lounges.
The second house was noticeably newer. Everything was up to date appointed and looked fresh. It has four bedrooms, 3 of which included king beds. The fourth has two twin beds. Again, each has an attached bathroom that was modern and well appointed. It was curious that each of these bedrooms included a minfridge/winecooler in the bedroom.
The kitchen/dinning/living area in the second house all kind of run together. The area is not large, but well used and very modern. The patio to this house is small, but includes two grills and a small pool.
It allowed for privacy when needed, but plenty of space to be together also. I would also note the main house had two sets of washer/dryer and the second house had one set.
Overall the complex was great for a group this large (we had 17). We had zero complaints at the end of the trip. The main house was a little quirky on the second floor with all of the doors and different routes between rooms, but that was not an issue for us. You can't beat the location of the house either. In the middle of the action, but a block off of Duval to provide a little more quiet. For us, this place was perfect.
