We traveled to Key West from the Northeast with our dear friends to enjoy the Sun and idilic views of the harbor from the sunny pool at Ocean Key Resort....You can imagine our surprise when we go to the beautiful pool and find a 10 story cruise ship docked 20 feet from the steps of the pool....The cruise ship blocked all the sunshine at the pool, and completely blocked the idilic view of the harbor. In addition all the cruise ship announcements and captains instructions are loudly broadcast directly onto the hotel pool deck, while at the same time the cruise ship guests are leering out if their staterooms at the hotel patrons sitting by the pool....Well I certainly didn’t see any pictures or disclosure of this on the hotel Website, and I understand this is a daily occurrence most of the year. Considering I was paying $555 average room rate for three nights, I approached the manager about this issue. She basically told me that it’s just to bad and there is nothing she can do, didn’t even offer me a drink . Bad move lady, you need to be smarter then that.

Hello and thank you for your review of Ocean Key Resort. We are sorry to hear of your disappointment regarding the cruise ships docked near the hotel. The Port Of Key West decides when and where they dock and it is typically once or twice a month in front of our property. I am sorry if the our staff member was not more apologetic and we do hope that we have a chance to host you again in the future.

We had a fantastic stay at Ocean Key Resorf and Spa. The staff are very friendly and we definitely will be back. Location was outstanding for us. Amenities were nice and it is a great place to stay for the annual speed boat races.

Best place to stay in Key West. Awesome facilities and staff. Cant wait until next year. We loved the ability to just walk out onto Duval and start exploring. Staff even got us our bikes and had them delivered.

There are some really good things, and not so good things, about this hotel.

We found it online over a year ago, and it looked great, so we booked it for Nov 2017. We had never been to Key West and didn't know what to expect, but based on the reviews and amenities this hotel looked perfect. Then the hurricane hit and we canceled our trip. We wanted to go back this fall, so we booked it and spent the first week of November 2018 there.
Perhaps we should have waited or looked for other options, because it didn't meet our expectations.

Pros:
- We had a lovely, large ("deluxe") room on the fourth floor, overlooking the pool and with a great view of the sunset. Our terrace was large enough, with comfy chairs, and we had breakfast out there every day but one (due to rain that morning). However, we had a low table, and at the pool, I noticed other terraces had regular height tables for 2 - So, since we had breakfast scheduled and included every day, why didn't the hotel provide this for us? I didn't want to have to call or complain to get that done, but suppose I should have.

- The bed was great, and the service at this hotel was excellent.

- We had plenty of towels, and they were fine.

- I was happy to find a lighted magnifying makeup mirror.

- We had a bite outside one day on the pier, and had dinner at the Hot Tin Roof outside, and both were very good, and we really enjoyed them.

- The location of this hotel is great, and well situated near lots of places. We were very happy to be there, but there are a few other good choices in the same area, and I left wondering if they would have been better ones. Maybe this hotel hasn't fully recovered from 2017...Read on...

Cons:
- The shower leaked onto the floor; the shower was small and the drain was cruddy looking; the one shower head was immovable and barely adequate; the body wash was not refilled and there was barely enough; the sinks (2) area was small with little space to put things; one sink didn't drain properly although the other did; and neither sink had hot water unless you let it run for 10 min first.

- there were no toiletry amenities other than moisturizer. I was expecting at least small sizes of what I saw in the shower, plus q tips and other extras.

- The closet was barely adequate with few hangers.

- we didn't use the TV much, but after a few days a worker came to repair it, so evidently it hadn't been working (we hadn't tried it yet)

- The tub was disappointing. It was the main reason we chose this room, and from the pictures, it looked great. However, it wasn't comfy, and the controls and drain were corroded or on their way to being. The jacuzzi jets were exposed, and didn't look clean; when we used them it was very loud and not soothing. The tub was old and not inviting. We used it once and that was it.

- This room was large, but much of the space was wasted in the entry of it. That space could have been better used/designed to accomodate a larger and better shower that wasn't so cramped next to the toilet, a bigger vanity/sink area, bigger closet, and nicer tub (would have loved a larger one, newer and able to be used by 2). There was no positive about the tub being located by the bed - it just should have been better, bigger, clean and more modern. It turned out to be NOT a reason to book this room.

- We hung out at the pool almost every morning into early afternoon. To get a good spot (in the shade, or partial) we had to 'claim' two spots very early because there weren't enough places for everyone who came to the pool.

- The pool was small - about 2 times as large (or less than) the size of a small pool in someone's yard. Consequently, for a few days it was crowded and loud, not peaceful.

- There were no floats available for the pool. Other nice hotels we have stayed in (with bigger pools) provide them, and it's an easy way to stay cool while tanning.

- I realize space is limited in Key West, so that may be why this pool is small. I wondered if other similar hotels' pools were bigger, though. On the plus side, the jacuzzi hot tub next to the pool was fine.

- The elevator: On our second night, we took the elevator and pressed 4. It did not stop on 4 but went to 5 and didn't open. Then it went down and didn't stop on 4. When it got to 1, I hurriedly pressed 1 and hoped the doors would open. They did, we jumped out, and from that point on, we always took the stairs because we didn't trust the elevator.

- The fitness room: it was very small and inadequate, with few machines. I was expecting a space almost 3 times larger with more machines etc. I use the elliptical every day, and one day, someone else was on the one and only one they had, and I had to wait quite a while to use it.

- Checkout:
We had booked our reservation months ahead (and had even booked for 2017 way ahead before we had to cancel). Our flight was late afternoon, so two days before our departure, we asked for a late checkout, either 2:00 or as close to 2:00 as possible. We were told 1:00 wouldn't be a problem, but to call the morning of our departure to confirm how much later after that we could have.

We called that morning, and were told we had to checkout by 12:00, and that it would cost an extra $100 to check out at 1:00, and an extra $200 to check out at 2:00. We explained what we had been told two days before, but that was dismissed. So we headed out to a museum and hurried back to check out by 12:00. Shortly before 12:00, we got a call in the room saying 12:30 would be fine. Had we known that earlier, we could have had lunch out and not hurried back. We were packed by then, and decided to go ahead and check out and have our bags stored. Then we went to lunch and came back to get a taxi to the airport that afternoon. Although the service all week was very good, the messed up late checkout was a bad way to end our stay. I don't understand why we were told one thing one day, and something else another day.

Room tip: Get a terrace overlooking the water, not the parking lot

Thank you so much for staying with us and taking the time to give us your review of Ocean Key Resort & Spa. We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed your guest room, the wonderful views, and that you had a pleasant dining experience. All of our guest rooms offer the wonderful Lather Cocoa Mango products which include body wash, shampoo, conditioner, and soap. We also have Q-tips and cotton balls in all rooms located inside the soap dish. We are sorry to hear that you did not have enough hangers and we would have been more then happy to bring more to your room. Some of the rooms have the older Jacuzzis which will be replaced in the upcoming year and you can always store your luggage and enjoy our pool or walk around town until you depart. We hope that we have a chance to host you again in the near future.

Spa was wonderful, the food at restaurant was good, and wait staff very attentive. Great views of Mallory Square, the roosters crowing all night long got tiring. Also found the street performer tedious after first evening of blasting his speakers towards the hotel and same musical set. The bed needs a better mattress.
