“High price, but no nickel-and-diming”
Reviewed 28 March 2012

Although the room prices are high, they don't add on all those annoying little extras like a "resort charge" (a breathtakingly greedy and stupid concept). They provide a free mini-fridge in each room, and cold water coolers by the pool and on the beach. There is no extra charge for beach/pool chairs and towels (although of course you'll want to tip the staff). Staff was all super; Mary was particularly helpful with on-target dining recommendations for my group.
My only complaint was that the stone floors, though nice and cool, are only swept daily, not washed. By the end of our stay, all of our group were complaining that our feet got black from walking on them - otherwise, the rooms were nice and clean.

Room Tip: Standard rooms can range from awful to excellent, but Lanai rooms are all pretty good. If you want...

My wife and I have now stayed at the Pier House twice.

The first stay was four nights in early to mid-January, 2011. We walked in and got a spacious room with a queen sized bed, a balcony with a view of the gulf, a lovely bathroom with a large shower with a rain showerhead, terrific housekeeping and room service, and they knocked 50 bucks off the usual price.

The gulfside bar was a blast, the dining deck a treat with great service, a fantastic view and food to compete with anything in town. The beach itself was cozy, sandy, and there was a raft in the clean and private swimming area. We're fro Cape Cod, and the water was like it is at home in August; perfect.

The spa...ahhhhh, what can I say, except that in my 66 years I cannot remember a better massage.

We are not wealthy, but no one ever made us feel uncomfortable or out of place for a second.

We returned this year for four more days, this time in late February, and everything I said above applies, with one glaring exception:

We reserved a room identical to the room we had had a year earlier, but when we arrived we discovered that we had been upgraded to a suite...at no additional charge.

Needless to say, we'll be back, and urge everyone who reads this to make sure they try the Pier House at least once in this lifetime; to fail to do so may result in an eternity of regret.

P.S. We drove both times and never used the car. Parking is plentiful.

P.P.S. My wife read this and reminded me to mention the magnificent tropical gardens on the hotel grounds. What a place.

Room Tip: Does not matter.

My wife and I chose the Pier House after reading a lot of positive reviews on Trip Advisor recommending it. We stayed for 5 nights. It was an all around great experience. The staff was all very friendly, the accomodations we excellent and the location can't be beat. With the hotel right on the North end of Duval Street where it meets the ocean almost anything in to see/do in Key west is a 10 minute walk away. The harbor is just to the east, Mallory Square to the west and most of Duval street is right there for you. My wife was 5 months pregnant so the short walks were VERY appreciated. They do offer free parking if you need to get anywhere far and have a car you neet to store while you are in town.

We took everyone's advice and got a room facing the Gulf. Some of the rooms do border close to Duval/Front street which gets loud especially close to bar closing time so something facing the garden/pool in the center of the hotel or facing the harbor will be MUCH quieter. If you are someone who might still be in the bar at closing time it won't matter. We were there over college spring break time and some people on our floor started to get a little rowdy before heading out one night but hotel security shut that down around 11:00 and made sure they knew to take the party someplace else after getting back for the evening. I've been to some hotels where the staff is reluctant to get anyone upset so the quick action was appreciated.

Other plusses:

- Both my wife and I felt the breakfast at the cafe each morning was excellent. There was no need to go elsewhere unless you wanted something quick before heading to an activity for the day.

- Housekeeping leaves a door hanger where you can mark when you will be out of the room so they know when to come in and clean up while you are gone.

- The wine bar has live entertainment each evening which we found to be very good and wrapped up at the right time. Good for sitting out and relaxing at the end of the day.

- The beach attendants to a nice job cleaning up the beach throughout the day so that it's always very orderly on their beach. No seaweed or empty glasses moving around.

- Free towels and water at the beach and pool. Nice.

Our only complaints:

- While the breakfast was very delicious they need more waitstaff in the morning. Two waiters for around 20 tables in the morning just doesn't cut it.

- The chairs for the beach and the pool are older and kind of uncomfortable. They could use an upgrade.

Just a really nice well done experience from a hotel in a great location.

Room Tip: Go with harbor view or ask for a traditional that faces the pool or garden. Exterior rooms view the...

My wife and I, along with another couple just returned from Key West. We had never been there and booked the Pier House after the many recommendations I saw on this site. We couldn't have been more pleased! It is in a perfect location (right at the end of Duval), the staff was great, the rooms were wonderful (great view from water front suite), it has it's own beach/heated pool and the food/drink was awesome. It really is a sanctuary from the action on Duval. In fact, you would have never known that you were so close to action because of the peace and quiet. I would certainly recommend the Pier House to anyone heading down.

Room Tip: Get a water view room. A bit more money but definitely worth it to have a cup of coffee in the morn...

My husband and I returned to Key West and we stayed in the corner Dockside suite for 3 nights. Having stayed at Ocean Key across the street before, we knew we liked the location at the end of Duvel Street, and thought we would try Pier House. We splurged on the dockside suite(room 807- first floor), as we really like just chilling on the deck, and watching the sunsets. The view was epic, you can see all the party boats cruise by at sunset, and watch all the action along the pier from your deck chair. The deck wrapped around 2 sides, with 2 loungers and 2 chairs and small table. Like another reviewer said, there is a large public area under these rooms, and there was a small crowd there for sunset. I would recommend getting a room on the second floor of the dockside building (6 rooms, 3 per floor) as it would be more private. The room itself was clean, very bright, if small. It was laid out in a way that the living room (with pull out) was in the front, with the bathroom between the living room and rear bedroom, in a sort of ' Jack and Jill' design. This room would work for 2 couples, or a family of 4.

The property itself is quite lager, but laid out well, so it feels casual. There several buildings, connected by pathways and filled in with lush gardens a water features. The pool is small, but open 24 hours, and there is a small private beach. The beach is groomed every morning (seaweed cleaned up), there is towel and lounge chair service, and a raft anchored in the swimming area. The beach is sheltered from the bay, so would be ok for smaller kids (but no life guard).

There are two bars on site; one very small, and full of locals, and another right by the beach. There is also a restaurant on site, that we ate at twice. The food was ok, nothing special. We were pleasant surprised with the Free Parking ( no valet service) and free, fast, Wi-FI.

Overall, this is a great resort in a perfect location. If you are going to come all this way to Key West I would splurge on a dockside suite and bask in the best sunsets you will ever see.

Room Tip: Dockside suites are large and sunny, second floor for privacy, and amazing sunsets. The views are be...
