“Great tour brings this old building to life”
Review of Legislative Hall

The Hall has been fully reconstructed over the past few decades, so you're not really looking at the original anymore. But it has been brought back true to its historic roots and, even more importantly, is brought back to life by the wonderful tour offered by the docent. You learn all about its double life as a county courthouse as well as the state legislature. We are from Maryland and did not know much about Delaware history, so all of the stories were new to us. In fact, what little we remembered from our school days proved to be mostly wrong!

We visited Dover en route to Annapolis. As it was a weekend, the state buildings were closed but it was great to walk around outside and see the old Capitol building, Legislative Hall and other state buildings in the square. I think there would usually be plenty of parking but there a fair on and the place was very crowded.

On Monday most museums were closed but not legislative Hall. We had a private guided tour explaining the entire two stories building. All year long you can visit the state capitol house even in sessions. Only caucus are closed to the public. The rooms are nice, made of Delaware bricks and the floors of Italian marble. Very fancy. Portraits of the governors and military heroes are nice also.

This is a nice building to tour. There are a lot of paintings along the hallways. When we were there, legislation was in the house and will be tomorrow. We parked a truck in front of the old state house and walked to the Leg. Hall, the Johnson Victrola Museum and walked the green square. Don't forget to visit the Governor Mansion/ Hall House as well.

The Delaware State House is not so big but it surely worths the visit. I appreciated the tour I made with a nice and knoledgeable guide who was happy to explain the history of the first state to have signed the American Constitution. The paintings in the two chambers are interesting as they depict special moments of the Delaware and the USA first moments as a new nation. It was a real trip back in the days...
