Marketplace is where we bring guests visiting from out of town, to show what Guilford is like. Marketplace is where we go on our own to treat ourselves. We love the atmosphere (bit of a history nerd- love the location on the historic green, the old building, love the original tiles on the walls), we love the food, we love the hot cocoa, we love everything about it. The meat counter has a great selection of meat that is comparably priced and fresher looking than most supermarkets. Most individual items are pretty reasonably priced.
It seems most peoples complaints have to do with the some-times-laid-back attitude of some of the staff, and the confusion about where to order things and where to pay for things. It was a little overwhelming our first time too- we've grown to love that atmosphere- to us it shows that the people seem to like working there. Everyone is nice and will help you if you can't figure it out. Just go with the flow. Remember that even though they're right next to each other, there are separate lines for sandwiches and salads. And if there is no one at the back register, then just go pay at the front where there is always a cashier. Good now you can't go wrong.
Our most common purchases are the HUGE handmade salads--- great variety of greens, proteins, toppings and dressing to choose from. For breakfast we live and breathe by the bacon egg and cheese on a bagel or roll--- you will never want to eat a fast food one again. Recently we started exploring the sandwiches more-- Just got the East Guilford--- never had such a good sandwich. The challenge from here becomes deciding whether to keep getting the same things that are amazing or keep trying new things. I'd say half the time we eat in the store, half the time we get to-go for later. We try to stop in at least once a month.
