Every time I visit CT for business I have to stop here a few times! This is definitely my favorite steak restaurant! I always have a great experience and the food tastes amazing! A steak with mushroom risotto and au gratin potatoes is my favorite dish!

Upon arrival for dinner we were barely greeted by the 3 hostesses. There seemed to be a lot of tension between them with some grumbling amongst them accompanied by sour faces and attitudes.

We had a reservation and gave our name ( we had arrived about 15 minutes prior to our reservation time as we know it gets super busy here) and when we checked in the hostess just nodded and then went on to wait on the next customer in line behind us. A smile and "Welcome to J Gilberts" would have been standard and expected. She didn't give any time estimate or suggest if we wanted to wait in the bar, etc..Quite a cold dismissive reception and not off to a good start.

Fortunately once we were seated our server was Jacob B and he immediately brought things up several notches. He was a great server; friendly, professional and helpful with menu choices. He described the daily specials and informed us of the price as well ( I personally find it irritating when somebody rushes through the specials without mentioning all the ingredients and never bothers to state the price). He was extremely familiar with the menu and was very helpful in assisting us with our choices.

I highly recommend for appetizers: Charcuterie & Cheese Slate which has local cheese and is simply divine as well as the Shrimp Durango. Both dishes were phenomenal.

Two of us had the Scallops Risotto and one had the 12 oz Strip Steak. Best Scallops ever and the Steak was 10 out of 10 and perfectly cooked.

Coconut Cake for dessert is marvelous

Overall thoughts and score
Food: 10
Service: by Jacob B 10
Atmosphere: 10 ( love the dividers between the booths so its not loud and gives an intimate feel- fireplace is awesome)
Parking: 10 plentiful
Hostess: First impression arriving to restaurant 1 ( lost a star on overall rating due to cold reception by 3 hostess's)

I've been to J. Gilbert's many times over many years (almost 20 years) and always had a great meal with great service. Although there are some other top name high end steakhouses in Connecticut, I think J. Gilbert's beats them all. They have the tastiest steaks, great sides, great wine, and killer desserts. They really know how to do everything right.

We celebrate happy times here because it is always so good. We don’t mind the expense because the food is consistently top notch, fresh, and tasty. The maple planked salmon is amazing, as are the crab cakes, steaks, potatoes au gratin, salads, wines, desserts, etc. We always love everything we get.

You won’t be disappointed with the food or service. Highly recommend!

We had the occasion to dine here a number of times here recently. The menu has changed slightly. No more can you get the field green salad with cherries and pine nuts. We were disappointed as it was our favorite salad. All, if not most, of the regular entrees were still on the menu and still come out perfectly cooked. Service is always pleasant. The management has changed which, for me, was a downer because the former manager would almost always stop by to check on our meals. Still a favorite place.
