First time to Colorado and heard Salida was a great place to visit. When Jefferson Farms came up as a place to stay, I immediately fell in love with the romantic notion of staying on an alpaca farm. We weren't disappointed. The accommodations were great - a New York style apartment in the middle of a farm! The bed was so comfortable and apartment was spacious. My husband is an artist and he set up his easel and painted a beautiful plein air piece of the gorgeous surrounding landscape.
We set up chairs outside, drank good wine and my husband serenaded the alpacas. I fell in love with these furry beings and realized that 80% of my vacation photos are of the alpacas and Lucy, a dog in residence. Dito, the farm manager was so kind, interesting and accommodating. He even let us help open the gates to let the alpacas graze in the morning. Yes, it smells like a farm, but it was one of my most memorable vacation experiences and I can hardly wait to visit again!
My husband and I and our border collie enjoyed our stay at Jefferson Farms which is a working alpaca ranch located about 5 minutes by car from Salida. We learned this apartment just became available for rent after being fully restored. We found it clean, cheerful, comfortable, and a haven for our dog. The large apartment (attached to the farm manager's home) has a private entrance, plenty of parking, and a large secure 4.5 ft fenced grass yard attached to the apartment which our dog enjoyed exploring. Inside, the apartment has multiple windows providing lots of natural light. The kitchen has corner windows framing a spectacular view of the Sangre De Cristo Mountain range. I enjoyed sipping my morning coffee while taking in the view. The king-sized bed was very comfortable. The free internet service was very reliable. Our dog enjoyed the provided bolstered dog bed. The owner even provided stainless steel dog dishes. The floors are covered with tile. So, no need to worry about your dog scratching a wood floor. At night, the farm was very quiet and peaceful; great for a good night's sleep. During the day, we enjoyed watching the alpaca cavort and make funny sounds. Thanks to the gracious owner, we learned about great trout fishing access to the Arkansas River just minutes from the farm. The farm manager and other employees were pleasant and respectful of our privacy. We felt like VIPs. The owner provided SB's coffee, cream, farm fresh eggs, and a fully equipped kitchen. As mentioned, this is a working ranch. And, with this comes farm "aromas" depending on how close to the alpaca pens you journey. Strangely, I enjoyed this "bouquet" because it reminded me of happy childhood experiences on my uncle's farm. My only regret was not trying the lovely Kohler soaking tub...but I plan to enjoy this on our next visit.
