I first visited Green Cat in 1999 after moving to Colorado.
As a cat-lover, it was impossible to resist the friendly green cat sign over the gallery's door.
I've since visited the Green cat four times and every time I visit, the artwork shifts slightly. Green cat features art glass, paintings, wood and stone sculpture created by the husband and wife who own the gallery.
The artwork ranges from quirky paintings of happy cats sleeping on mouse-patterned sofas to beautiful, sensual stone sculptures.
Most recently the gallery offered strands of beads sourced from a bead trader in Ghana. Also for sale were T-shirts featuring those wonderful Green Cat images, artglass jewelry, felted purses, and refinished decorative cabinets.
On the quiet Saturday evening we visited, we had a chance to chat with Steff, the wife half of the team who creates the paintings, art glass, and decorative pieces. She took us to the the studio which is in the back of the gallery and showed us an art glass piece that was just about complete along with several smaller finished pieces.
The studio was filled with clippings and odd bits of metal, glass, and paper with images and patterns which have inspired Steff's art. It was a really fun and intimate opportunity to see the artist's creative process in action.
I sometimes feel intimidated by art galleries. Like I somehow have to be more sophisticated and "artsy" to even walk into a gallery. Which is what I love so much about the Green Cat.
It's such an open, friendly place you feel at home right away and you can freely browse and enjoy the pieces on display.
Whether you're a new or experienced art lover, you'll find something to appreciate at the Green Cat.
