Okay, the hike is BEAUTIFUL, but it is an @ss kicker!!! I am not sure what the elevation drop is on the way but it is enough that when you are going down, you DREAD the return trip up. Then when you are on the return trip, you hate life. Again, it IS beautiful! The springs themselves were NOT worth the effort for me. We found a naked guy in the best ones which wasn't cool for my 15 year old daughter (or her twin brother... or my wife... or me). I know, clothing optional but Jesus... We attempted to construct a large pool by diverting hot spring water - that was actually fun. Saw some wildlife which was cool. Had a good time but don't count on the hot springs as the reward...

The Piedra River Hot Springs Web site has very accurate directions. Trust them, it takes a while to get there. 6.7 mile dirt road off of 160. The First Fork 166 dirt road has a sign for Sheep Creek Trail. This is the trail head. From there, hike down toward the river. Once at the meadow, ponderosa pine river camp turn right on to the single track. Keep going about a half mile. Along the way you will see various camp sites with fire pits and access to the river.

The hot springs are a set of 5 or so pools along the river.
This would be great for an over night or a day hike / picnic.
Expect to see others on the path with dogs.

It is an al natural springs, so if you don't mind being "nudey scooty" in front of others then go ahead. I wore my suit.

These hot springs are the natural ones on the Piedra river in the National forest They are not the commercial operation in downtown Pagosa Springs on the San Juan river that is shown in the picture. If is a about a 3 mile roundtrip hike from a forest service road several miles from highway 160. Stop in to the Pagosa ranger station and ask for directions. You descend a steep hillside to the Piedra river and then follow it upstream to a couple of rocky pools on the banks of the river. You will want to visit when the river is running low. Each time we visited, the area had a fair bit of foot traffic.

The pools are a bit pricey but you can access every pool for an extra $5. The pools are so varied in temperature it is easy to spend at lot of time in the hot springs without feeling sick or unhealthy. Would certainly come back agian

The hot springs are actually located on the San Juan River in downtown Pagosa Springs. A great place to go after a hike or a day of skiing. Many different pools with a widw temerature range so there is truly something for everyone. If you dare you can even take a brief plunge in the river. Very relaxing and I have to admit the pools do seem to have some healing qualities for me and help get rid of aches and pains.
