Great scenery & an easy drive.I would suggest to go there before the Fall as it closes due to weather. I would also suggest you drive the Lookout Mountain route also & you can see Denver from the heights & look down on the Coors Brewery in Golden

There aren't many places where one can go for a beautiful mountain drive 30 minutes away from a major city. This is just one of many Byway drives in Colorado, and the whole system is a national treasure.

This is a very special drive up to Mt. Evans and the mountain goats. Do look for Echo Lodge at the beginning of the drive and stop on the way up or down for a unique meal or snack. Food is always good and the inside is definitely "old cabin" look. One of the best gift shops ever and includes lots of choices for mountain goat and Mt. Evans related items.
Initially, the drive is similar to other mountain drives. However, this is not a fast drive due to the number of switchbacks and often there are marmots on the road. They run on and off the roads and often will pop up through little holes in the road. The road is very narrow in places with steep drop offs. It is not for the faint of heart... either the driver or passengers. Road is not always in great condition, so be aware... Summit Lake is a beautiful reward for your efforts. It gives you a place to stop and has some protected types of flowers/plants in the area. The final 5 miles is a slow drive, but worth the effort. If you reach the summit early, there may be mountain goats and sometimes big horn along the way. There is also a final hike to the true summit and there you can sign a book to document you made it to the summit.
Be aware of the altitude at that point and watch for any symptoms of altitude sickness. Lots of water will be helpful. Also, it can be very windy at the parking lot level and very cold at times. Dress in layers with gloves available if it is chilly at all.
When you come back down the mountain and reach the beginning of the road again, you will see Echo Lake. It's a really lovely lake and has picnic facilities available. It's a true mountain experience for everyone with hiking, fishing and great scenery.

This is our favorite area for fall colors. Drive into Chicago Gulch (near Idaho Springs) when the leaves are golden for a magical experience.
