Great house, great location. Due to a daughter being assigned to Logroño as part of a US/Spain English teaching program, we decided to spend the holidays with her. After looking at many options, I went for the small town choice as I thought it would provide a very intimate, comfortable base for both day trips out to the region and a relaxing Christmas celebration.
The house was great. 4 nice bedrooms, a really great kitchen with up to date appliances and very sharp knives (they had me there), comfy dining area, and, (trumpets please), the wine cellar. Local wines that you can simply pick and record on your "wine consumption list". Very cool, they were great.
And on and on. Simply a very comfortable place to be in.
An outdoor grill and a large paella pan dictated what our Christmas dinner would be. Fabulous chorizo, bomba rice, and great seafood available in the Logroño Carrefour supermarket made for a delicious, memorable meal. And that was just one of many.
Bonus points to Ollauri for the olive pressing operation three blocks down the street where we bought olive oil that was three weeks old. I can't even begin to describe how absolutely game changing wonderful it was. Think about it: Olive oil is technically a fruit juice, and aren't fruit juices at their peak when fresh squeezed?
Day trips to bodegas (wine producers) such as Marques de Riscal, Muga, and the wonderful wine museum at bodega Vivanco were all delightful and educational.
Great classic Spanish towns such as Briones, Cenicero, Haro, El Ciego, Laguardia, Santo Domingo de la Calzada and even Vitoria are all within an hours drive. Small restaurants with delicious local specialties abound. Ask the locals, they were very helpful.
So, partially in the spirit of "veni, vidi, vici", we came, we saw, but did not need to conquer. We simply enjoyed.
Excellent accommodation for us 6 old foggies ! The idea of the cellar is excellent, and we used it well.
Black Grape was well situated for the day trips we had planned in Rioja as well as San Sebastián and Bilbao. The town of Ollauri is tiny but there is a great spot for coffee and snacks in the morning and a grocery store for filling up the fridge at the town house all within 50 metres of the town house. There were only four of us but this rental has plenty of room for more people. Highly recommend.
