Myall Park Botanic Garden

Owner description: Myall Park Botanic Garden is more than a beautiful place where people can find respite and inspiration. It is a refuge for biological treasures from all around Australia, an outdoor classroom where people can acquire knowledge and motivation to be stewards of the plant and animals in our communities. Myall Park Botanic Garden is in an ideal location to feature Australian plants from semi-arid, arid and dry tropical regions. Soil types differ throughout the Garden and range from neutral softer grey brigalow soil, light loams over clays, to red lateritic acid gravel ridge. A significant feature of the ridge is the deep grey/blue water holding layer of clay which allows for the cultivation of deep rooted large trees.

We had a great time in this fascinating garden. We stayed overnight in the Avochie Cottage. This sleeps 6 and has most things you need for a short stay. It was $80 for the night for the 2 of us, there's a higher fee if there are more people. We also took our own linen and saved another small fee. The bed was comfortable and, although a little rustic (counted 8 frogs in the toilet) it was good.

The gardens are easy to find and are a treat for gardeners, native flora and birders. We were there for the birds and had a fabulous time, saw species that we don't get in Brisbane; great to see a spotted bowerbirds interacting at the bower. And then we also enjoyed the garden and loved the plants. Favourite was the eucalyptus salubris - lovely smooth tan bark. But you can't go past history and miss the original very first grevillea Robyn Gordon. A lovely large shrub now over 50 years old this is the parent plant to millions across Australia. What a visionary Mr Gordon was when he established the garden.

Scott the caretaker was very welcoming and knowledgeable about the gardens and took great pride in talking us through the gardens attractions, including the gallery of flora drawings by Mrs Gordon. Between 4 and 5 hours west of Brisbane it was an interesting drive to an interesting place. Probably best during spring we think it is good at any time. We'll be back.

This park has a wonderful array of plants spieces that were in full flower when we visited. The bird life was just amazing, a large number of nectar eating from large to small and all different colours. This is a must see for native plant lovers.
