We visited this museum the day after their "members day" and it was very quiet and peaceful. Our ride on the 1913 electric train was delightful since we were the only passengers. Our conductor and lineman gave us personal attention and lots of historical information. This is a "must see" for kids and railroad enthusiasts.
There are many old trains and street cars under-roof outside the museum building -- very historical experience. Inside the museum there are exhibits of transportation and energy. Children can enjoy 2 or 3 tables of wooden train sets and move the cars around. Outside ...Take a train ride on the line that served Sacramento to Oakland up to the 1950's.
All the people involved in this museum were so friendly and very informative. A great way to spend a few hours. The ride on the railcar is not too long, so the kids wont get bored. The scenery is nice. Wasn't crowded. The museum is interesting too. Lots of restored railcars, some you can walk thru. We had two 10 years olds with us and they enjoyed the museum and the train ride. I even think we turned one of them into a train enthusiast!
If you like trains, and in particular electric trains, you and your family will love this museum. The gift shop is super fun for kids with two Thomas the Train set-ups that the kids can play with for hours. The train ride is very cool, with lots to see and enjoy. The docents are knowledgable and interactive. And the rebuilt and refurbished trains are an historic step back in time. Like this place so much that I became a member.
We lucked out and hit this wonderful museum on a day when they ran a multitude of trains in order for enthusiasts to photograph. They were also having a train garage sale! Good gift shop, good displays and EXCELLENT train rides. Their restoration shops have SO many trains!
The Western Railway Museum has a lot about it to like. They have a two great sheds full of vintage rail cars and lots of electric locomotives. They have an excellent visitor center and gift shop. And they have train rides! We took advantage of the train ride and had a nice time. Along the tracks there were a lot of old Western Pacific box cars parked. And on the way back they stopped by shed #3 (I believe it was called). This shed is not always open to the public from what we gathered. And I can't believe why it's not. This shed is amazing! There are some absolutely fabulous vintage sleeper cars, a lovely old steam engine and some very interesting electrified rail cars and locomotives. To be honest, this shed made the trip for us. If it had not been open it would have been far less interesting. The other shed that is open to the public is full of cool old street cars, but to me the other shed was the full deal.
