“I got to do the Big fortune teller!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 June 2013

We drove down to Santa Monica from Venice Beach area and found a lot of the parking was really expensive so with a little persistence we managed to find meter parking for 2 hours which was a fraction of the cost. We took a stroll down the beach to the pier and walked to the very end. I was super excited to find a zoltar machine 9from the film Big) so stuck a dollar in and had a fortune reading! We also grabbed a icey drink and watched the various artists creating and selling gifts, a magician and a man playing a steel drum. Lovely way to spend a couple of hours.

“End of the road”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 June 2013

We just completed 3 weeks across America Route 66., terminating at Santa Monica Pier . There is a beautiful beach , a Bubba Gump restaurant and assorted fairground rides shops and stalls .Its not far to walk to the main shops either. Santa Monica felt more homely than most of LA the shopping area is pedestrianised you dont have to cross 12 lanes of traffic to go from one side to the other .Pier entry is free , only downside was the famous merry go round which for some reason is shut Tues/Wed I think

“Tourist pier...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 June 2013

It's mainstream America in the heart of tinsel town.
It's the start (or end) of Route 66 and has the normal tourist clout and available along with the usual suspect: Buber Gump's Seafood Restaurant.
Do it so you can say you have. Apart from that it's a nice view up and down the coast on a clear day (don't expect to see any further south than LAX though due to the smog).

“History and entertainment”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 June 2013

The historic pier is being renovated, it will be ready next year. Thanks to the engineers, everything goes on without interruption, and the pier can be enjoyed as it is during normal operation.

The shops are good, the churros are great, and the view is just fantastic.

“Rickety tourist trap”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 June 2013

Nothing there except some overpriced carney style rides and magnet selling booths. The distressed wood made it difficult to walk.

Fortunately the ocean is always cool so that makes it worth the trip

As we dined at the veranda restaurant, the pier looked better from a distance.
