Unsanitary and filthy! We pulled down the blankets and discovered mouse droppings in the sheets! The manager apologized and said that the room hadn't been occupied in a while. After getting the key s to another room, we checked the bedding immediately. No mouse droppings in that one.

However, the bathroom floor had several long hairs on it - we both have short hair, so they weren't ours. The sink had residue from a prior guest's bar of soap; the table was sticky and the refrigerator had been turned off with the door closed. As a result it had an awful smell. We just left our food in the cooler. The microwave counter hadn't been wiped down from the last guest(s). Rock hard beds didn't improve the situation.

The only positives about this place: it's the closest lodging to Carrizo Plain National Monument; it's quiet and the internet works well.

If we return to Carrizo, we'll stay in Maricopa or Taft.

and there ain't no town..... I give this place 5 honest stars for coolness. I could give it 5 for weirdness, too. Weird in the best sense of the word. It's in the middle of nowhere, run down, decrepit, with the wind pulling it down and trying to return it to nature. It's kinda like the beginning of a cheap horror movie when you check in, with a sinister old man showing you around. But he's cool. Had his picture taken with Jerry Brown, and that's good enough for me. The room has everything you need a motel room to have. Bring your own food, because there are no restaurants or stores anywhere around here. This is the gateway to Carizo Plains National Monument or a lonely stop between nowhere and nowhere else.... The landscape is inspiring. You can see antelope, golden eagles, beautiful and rare wildflowers. Bring your camera for sure. You might stay longer than you intended, so pack an extra cooler full of cheap American beer. You only live once, my friend, and this place may not be open next year.......
