I longed Guatemalan fried chicken and when I saw Pollo Campero from the freeways I was very happy. The place is clean and the staff are super friendly; the only thing is that is freezing cold inside. The menu is different than when I was a child. I think its been changed to accomodate our mexican friends taste buds but I guess diversion is good for different tastes. I will stick to the original menu: fried chicken, coleslaw salad, mashed potatoes and a coke. The chicken and mashed potatoes are delicious. The coleslaw was good but different from the recipe sold in Guatemala (so much better). My kids love going there, they order the kids version...yummy. Price is great, except for dessert...very high. We go back once in a while.

I have seen this restaurant featured on the Travel Channel, Bravo, Food Network and the local news (when it opened). I have driven past this place many, many times always saying,"I want to try that place since they are suppose to have the best fried chicken ever!!!" But we drive right past it and never turn around. Well... everything changed a couple months ago when we (my fiancee and 2 yr old son) were driving around the area sight seeing. I told him as we past Pollo Campero that this place was suppose to have the best chicken and it has been featured on many shows saying just that. He said, "huh? one day we will have to check it out." I sighed as I have said those words many times before. We finish our outing and to my surprise he pulls up into the driveway of Pollo Campero!!!! I looked at him and shouted,"Are we seriously going to eat here???" He laughed at said, "yes you dont want to?" We parked (which was packed), they share a parking lot with a Famsa, so it was Saturday afternoon and packed. We walked into the place and was greeted with hellos. It is a small place almost the same decor as you would find in an El Pollo Loco. We walked up to the counter and told the girl that this was our first time so we are going to need a minute. The menu has fried chicken, grilled chicken, a chicken burrito and 6 versions of chicken tacos (they are a limited time only). The girl told us that even though their grilled chicken is the best since this is our first time here we need to go with the fried chicken. We ordered the fried chicken that came with our choice of 2 sides (blacks beans & white rice, campero beans, campero rice, french fries, corn on the cob, and mashed potatos &gravy are your choice of sides). We ordered french fries and black beans & white rice (my fiancees favorite). Then I wanted to try the tacos so you got 3 of them with a side. I ordered the 2 ranch chicken tacos & a chiptole chicken taco. Then we orderd mash potatoes as the side dish. As we were ordering a cook brought out a tray of fresh cooked chicken. It was the prettiest color of fried chicken I have ever seen. We got our order to go. They have a salsa bar with a bunch of condiments to choose from. We didnt get any to take home with us. Our order was ready in like 5 mins.
We live about 25 mins away from this place so about half way home I told my fiancee that we should try the chicken while it was hot to see how it taste fresh before reheating it when we got home. He agreed! I think the smell was killing him just like it was me!!! LOL I took out a leg since it was right on top. It was piping hot and so crispy. Our son was screaming in the backseat, "bite bite bite!!!" I tore of a piece and the juice that ran from this chicken was amazing. It wasnt grease either!!! I gave the piece to my fiancee, then tried to cool a piece of for my son but he was screaming so loud that I didnt get it cooled down that much. They both wanted more!!! I took a bite and was in fried chicken heaven!!!! Let me say this now... I HATE Kentucky Fried Chicken!!! I always get sick after I eat them (which I havent in over 2 yrs) Popeyes Chicken is alright, and Churchs is tolerable. This fried chicken was amazing!!! I had never in my life tasted a chicken that was so crispy, juicy and packed with flavor. And it didnt leave my fingers greasy either!!!
We finally got home to feast on the rest of our treasures. I heated up the chicken, french fries and tacos in the oven. The sides went in the microwave. When they came out the chicken was still crispy, non greasy, the fries were as crispy as they were when we got them, and my tacos were so soft and juicy I couldnt wait to bite into them.
My fiancee dug into the beans & rice first. He ate the first bite but said he wasnt going to eat anymore. He didnt like the flavors of them. He said that Popeyes black beans & rice are 100% better then theirs. They ate the mashed potatoes and said that the gravy was alittle spicy. My son really didnt eat that much of them so I am thinking he is correct. The french fries on the other hand where crispy and golden brown. We love McDonalds fries and my boyfriend said these are 95% better then McDs!!!!! He is correct. They are very very delish!!!
I unwrapped my 1st ranch taco and was met with a soft homemade corn tortilla! I was like babe look at this taco and how soft the tortilla is. That is fresh corn tortilla right there. I bit into it and was in pure taco euphoria!!! The grilled chicken was so moist and packed with flavor. The flavors of the taco were incredible!! I downed that one and couldnt wait to bite into the next one. I reluctantly shared with my fiancee, and he agreed this was one great taco. We gourged ourselves with the best Peruvian Fried Chicken and Tacos I had ever had.
Lets just say it was so good that my fiancee had me drive the next day over to them before our football game to get more chicken, french fries and tacos!!!! Everytime we have guests we drive 30 mins to go get this chicken which everyone falls in love with!!!
Thank goodness for Pollo Campero!!! :)
