Although we live in Sacramento, we had never visited the Governor's mansion so thought it was about time. They have tours on the hour and are open from 10am to 5pm, Wednesday through Sunday. The tours last from 30 minutes to an hour, based on the size of the group and questions. Our tour had more children which made it fun but probably on the longer side (almost an hour). The mansion was built in 1877 as a private residence but since the early 1900s, it was home to 13 of California's Governors. Since the late 60s, it has been run by the State Parks. You can see items from various eras--furnishings, TVs, phones, appliances, photos, footed tubs, clothes, dishes, etc. The tour was interesting and informative for only $5. We were sad to hear that this was one of the sites that was slated for closure due to the Budget. Let's hope that somehow they can save it.
I posted some photos and review of my afternoon in Sacramento at: http://insightfultravel.wordpress.com/2012/02/19/sacramento-afternoon-in-february/
