“Better for a single couple or small family”

My husband and I, along with my brother & his wife, just returned recently from our weekend at Cabin Fever. First let me preface this review by saying the cabin was charming, looked exactly like the photos, and we had a lovely time. However, here are a few things you need to know or consider depending on your visit and who's coming with you. While the cabin is charming it is small. The upstairs where the bedroom and loft are located is very cramped and literally right smack next to each other. Very steep steps up & down. There are no steps into the loft, rather its a steep slat of wood with 3 small beams across it as your foothold. Not great on adult feet but kids might enjoy it. Also, the loft is very small and is not very adult height friendly. Rule out the loft for adults. You stoop over - but again, good for small kids. We gave the bedroom to my brother & his wife and we slept downstairs. The couch is actually a small futon that can open up and we slept crammed on that. ha! (Think oversized twin) However - having the windows open and that great ceiling fan really kept the room cool and comfortable.

You are out in the middle of nowhere so bring ANY and ALL food you want to eat. We brought all our food for the weekend and that was good because if you run out you're a good 45 minutes from anything. The small store where Mothers Kitchen is located only carries ice and small supplies. Nothing cold except drinks. The cabin is stocked for a full kitchen but we brought our own mini Keurig so my husband & sister in law could have their K-cups.

Only 1 bathroom but nicely done. It states 1 towel per person so we brought our own towels just in case but found that not only were there 4 hanging towels to use, there were extra towels rolled up in a basket along with plenty of washcloths. Not to mention a full washer & dryer if needed. We did not notice any soap for the shower -unless we missed it but I don't think so - but thankfully we brought our own. There is a glass jar that contains some travel size shampoo if necessary.

The TV in the living room is an Apple/Smart TV that has 3 local channels from SD: NBC, CBS, and Fox. Also Netflix. We used our DirecTV app from our iPad to lock into ESPN and several other stations to watch. TV does cut out sometimes but I guess thats to be expected up in the mountains. There is only 1 TV in the cabin so bring an iPad or something if you want to watch a movie or TV in the upstairs bedroom - same for the loft w/ kids.

Beautiful deck to hang out on. We ate dinner out there Friday night and it was so quiet and peaceful. Very nice! Only saw birds & squirrels for wildlife. Bummer! Ha! The BBQ is a propane BBQ. If you have kids, I highly recommend bringing some sort of nightlight because it does get dark. Or even a flashlight to navigate the steep stairs at night.

We didn't have any problem with the wireless internet. We were able to use our iPhones & iPad with no problems. We never used the fireplace or heater because it was still warm enough outside. For directions to the cabin you need to know that the GPS in vehicles and iPhones were not able to find it if you use the "Palomar Mountain, CA" address. We did click on the direction part of the tips and were able to follow it off the 76E. But...if you type in Santa Ysabel for city it brings you right to the cabin. Found that out on day 2.

There are 3 casinos in the area but the 2 closest are Valley View & Harrahs. Still at least 40-45 minutes away. Bates Nut Farm is about same distance. Pala is just a bit too far away. The road up to the cabin is VERY windey and snake like with tight turns. If you are at ALL motion sickness prone, dizzy prone - take a Dramamine before you drive up. Its 6.5 miles from bottom to top - 5500 feet in elevation. Thankfully the traffic wasnt bad on it so we could drive slow. Key code gets you into the cabin but remember to push the big middle button to lock the door when you leave.

Note: Mothers Kitchen is a small quaint vegetarian cafe down a few miles from the cabin. They are only open from 9am-4pm daily. Decent food but a bit pricey.

Overall a wonderful time and a charming cabin but I recommend it better for a solo couple or a family with kids just for the space. And Bonnie was great in communicating with me. Very prompt emails and very helpful.

We're glad you enjoyed your stay at the Cabin. We are sorry to see you gave us only four stars.

This response is to clarify a bit for future travelers so you they don't experience what seemed to be surprises for this guest. We also need to provide some corrections.

Please carefully read the marketing and view the photos we have provided to insure you are prepared for a wonderful stay. After booking your trip, we provide you a very thorough 'Tips for your Trip' that give accurate information to make your stay as wonderful and stress free as possible.

Yes, the cabin is tiny as you can see in the photos. Our photos and marketing show that the loft is a delightful place for kids. However, adults aren't able to stand up in the loft and the futon is designed for one adult.

In the Tips, we go into detail about the directions, how your lock the keyless entry (guests love it - no keys to loose!), the nearest market being an hour away and suggest you 'stock up and fuel up, before you come up'. Simply read the 'Tips' and you will be all set.

The reason we ask for one towel per guest, as we explain in the marketing and the Tips, is we are experiencing a drought. We also ask that the washer use be very limited as we are on a septic system. Yes, we have more towels but 'one towel per guest' is much appreciated in this tiny community with a small well water system also asking to be conservative with water usage.

We used to provide those convenient, big containers of shampoo, conditioner, and bath soap. However, after a couple years of often finding them missing occasionally, we added to our marketing and our Tips, asking for guests to 'please bring your favorites'. I am sure you understand. We have a pretty complete list of things to 'not forget' when you are packing for your trip. I used to update the Tips often but it has stayed pretty much the same the past year or so. Very appreciated by guests.

The marketing and Tips state that we have nightlights. They are plugged into outlets throughout the cabin. We also state that a flashlights might be real handy.

Yes, the roads are windy. If you get car sick, it works great to be the driver. If you are looking down at your phone or whatever, you will probably get car sick, no matter what you take to prevent it.

Our only little restaurant up here has very different hours than stated in this review. It depends on the season. That is why we provide a link and phone number in our Tips and Welcome Book so you have the current, correct info.

We do our very best to make your stay as positive and pleasant as possible. We hope you decide to join us, a mile nearer heaven, up here on Palomar Mountain.

“Beauty away for the hustle and bustle”

Amazing place. From the moment we got in touch with Bonnie, everything went so smoothly. She was right on the ball with any queries. Nothing was too much trouble and she would respond to our queries within minutes, that's a rarity!
I was blown away on arrival. The drive there was just beautiful, crisp air & breathtaking views. So comfy from the moment we popped our bags down. The heater was on and we were set for the night. The modern T.V accommodated our hard drive, so we could watch all of our movies and just relax on the comfy sofa/

The balcony has lovely views of the trees, made lunch outside a real treat!

The air is crisp, there's no noise from neighbors and hardly any traffic.

I'd recommend going to a supermarket and stocking up, as there's not many food stores within close proximity.

Overall, a wonderful and relaxing end to our vacation before we headed back home to Australia.

Excellent value for money and service second to none. Thanks Bonnie for making our stay so pleasurable. She even refunded our security deposit immediately, which doesn't happen too often when we travel (usually we have to chase the manager / owner up for refund status).

If you're looking to escape out of California for a while, this is the place to visit. 2 hours from La Jolla and you're in another world. One other thing, the wi-fi reception 10/10! Even my mobile works perfectly from up there.

Thanks again :)

“Mountain Fever :)”
Reviewed 12 April 2014 for a stay in April 2014

We've been on the mountain several times, Spring brake approaching everything was booked and suddenly...miracle- one day in advance we've got the week end in the Cabin Fever.
Did we love it- you bet- all meals outside , like many others before us, never mind the fog- you just can't beat that air and birds orchestra!
Plenty of hiking /strolling option, great location by all means.
Cabin is wonderful- well equipped kitchen: important, because we cook all meals from scratch.Extra blankets, fire wood provided.Loved those new counters and bathroom with a tub, instead of usual shower. We will be back for sure.Thank you Bonnie!!!!

You brought so much joy to this mountain! Loved seeing your family enjoying hot soup 'round the table on the deck surrounded by misty clouds! It was fun driving by and seeing you out for a hike through the neighborhood. And, you brought such beautiful sounds of music to Cabin Fever! If only, everyone could hear your "Golden Dreams" CD you preformed so beautifully on the Stradivari violin! If only...

“Beautiful cabin in the woods with all the conveniences of home!”
Reviewed 16 August 2013 for a stay in August 2013

I really enjoyed this nice rustic cabin with its charming mountain decor. The feeling was of living in the woods far from the city yet with all the conveniences of a modern home. There was lots of beautiful wood in this cabin inside and out. Wonderful deck. Nice stone fireplace. It was spotlessly clean, with a fresh feel and comfortable. The owner was so thoughtful, helpful and knowledgeable about Mt. Palomar.
