I stayed here 8 years go when the property was a Viceroy, and returned for the first time this month. It's still a lush, beautiful property, but a lot of the changes they're making to decor seem to be shifting it to that now-generic Ace Hotel look, which is a disappointment. Gone are the yellow striped chairs and regency furniture. It hardly looks like Kelly Wearstler did the design at this point.
However the service is still good, rooms are comfortable, and the landscaping continues to charm. I also appreciate that they have a pool for families and the other pools are designated adults-only.
The one real disappointment at the Avalon is the food. We ate three meals at the hotel and each one of them had issues in terms of taste.
I used to recommend this hotel to friends without caveats but now I have a few. Still beautiful, just not the complete package anymore.More
