The ambiance of the Union Hotel during the holidays is not to be missed. Their decorations are a work of art. Each Christmas tree is completely different. My wife's favorite thing is the gingerbread stars hanging from the ceiling in the café.

Returning to our wedding spot five years later was as magical now as it was on our wedding day. We were headed to have dinner at the Union Hotel for our anniversary, as we do every year since we had our reception there. We decided to stop by The Grove where we held the wedding. To our surprise there was a wedding that had just finished. It felt just as magical now as we remembered it was five years ago. The Union Hotel was decorated beautifully for the reception. We had a delicious dinner and remembered what a fabulous and beautiful day we had due to the hard work by Barbara and her staff. We will return again next year!

Been going here since I was a small child, and it never fails to fill me up with classic Italian food!
The historic building lends to the ambience, along with the REAL Taper candles in Chianti Bottles on your table!
On the price range side with the average menu item being $22, BUT you get Bread, Salad, band the most AMAZING homemade Minestrone Soup with it! So, a good deal in the end!
Try their Apple Fritters for dessert, if you have any appetite left! If not, buy a package to take home!!!

The Gonellas have run union hotel long enough that there is still a ring in the sidewalk outside to tie up your horse ! Again you can meet 2 or 3 generations of the family when you visit. Geared to family style dinners with soup, salad, anti-pasti, bread, and ravioli plus your entrée choice. Typical Italian dishes, and some really fine quality well cured steak are the offerings. They do have a pizzeria in a separate room.. open at odd times.. perhaps summer , also for take out. But this is primarily a resturaunt with table cloth seating inside and outside in the patio. Also a full bar which is separate. People still drive all the way from San Jose..a 100 miles.. to eat a family style dinner in Occidental. An excellent bakery café.. with expresso is open from about 6:30 am till noonish. Just baked goods and coffee. Great Croisants, turn overs, and rolls. Jazz too! Separate but connected to the rest of the "hotel" which of course has no rooms !

My husband and I come here whenever we are in town. This is a great, casual restaurant. The house salad is wonderful and the bruschetta is my favorite. I get it every time I visit! Now they have coupons for free bruschetta with purchase of an entrée, our waitress gave us one! The portions are HUGE so keep that in mind. Its a good place to share a meal or have a lot of leftovers! Nice, classic family Italian environment and a nice change of pace from some of the stuffy establishments in wine country.
