It frankly pains me to give Friar Tuck's a bad review as this is otherwise a long-established and well-respected restaurant in Nevada City. However, their fondues (that used to be their claim to fame), whether cheese or meat, are not only mediocre at best (I do know about fondues, having lived the first half of my life in France) and what you get for what you pay (approx. $30) is a sad joke. Nothing else comes with the fondues, no salad, no side dish... The cheese fondue had a mealy texture when it should be cheesy, soft & elastic; and the meat fondue came with barely enough meat and an absolutely awful assortment of boring sauces (including tartar & melted butter, which you would expect for fish but not red meat!!! How about some Béarnaise, French Mustard, Aoili, Spicy Mayo...etc. instead). What else to say: the service is impersonal, the lighting too dim (in fact, deficient in the back room), and the wines priced way too high. I first visited this restaurant some 20 years ago but I think I will now wait another decade before giving it a third try.

We're sorry you didn't enjoy our fondues. They have been a customer favorite for over 40 years. Our cheese fondue is made with swiss gruyere and emmentaler cheeses with white wine and garlic. Our meat fondues come with 10oz of meat/seafood and an assortment of sauces. We keep the sauces simple, yes. We keep the emphasis on the meat/seafood flavors. However, we'd be happy to bring you any of these sauces mentioned above as we have all of those in house. Our restaurant lighting was professionally designed and purposefully dim as that is the romantic ambiance we strive to create. We are very sorry you didn't have a better experience with us. We look forward to another opportunity to earn your business.

I love Tucks because it reminds me of my childhood growing up in Nevada City. The bar is awesome & has great bartenders but the food is not so awesome. I’m a foodie & love to eat so I’ve been very unhappy w/my meals. We have tried several times & every time we are disappointed. We will go enjoy the bar but say no to dinner!!

Thank you for being a loyal customer. We are so glad you enjoy our bar. We're sorry you've been disappointed with your meals. Please feel free to let your bartender know your concerns and perhaps they can help guide you to something you might enjoy on our menu. We have many choices and many customer favorites that are always a hit. Otherwise, thank you for enjoying our bar!

We had heard this was a local favorite, and we weren't disappointed. Servers were nice and very prompt. They specialize in fondue and the small plate we tried was great. Tempura shrimp and sea bass entrees were both well done and of high quality. Hawaiian ice cream pie was a special treat. Well done, Friar.

What a great place to have dinner when visiting the Grass Valley / Nevada City Area. Reservations are recommended. We waiting in the Bar for only 20 minutes before we were seated. The Prime Rib was very good and the Menu is full of choices, so you will have a hard time picking your meal. The Bar is very well stocked and has Live Music on certain days.

Friar Tucks was recommended by friends who had visited and we were pleased we took the recommendation. It was a Saturday night and the place was hopping. Glad we had a reservation. There was live music in the bar which drew a filled to capacity crowd. We both followed our cold and yummy martinis with char-broiled burgers which were done perfectly. Lots of diners were enjoying the communal fun of fondue on a very cold night. The structure itself is a mix of original brick and stucco and filled with booths and tables spread out throughout a couple of rooms. I think this is a must visit dining location for Nevada City.
