It frankly pains me to give Friar Tuck's a bad review as this is otherwise a long-established and well-respected restaurant in Nevada City. However, their fondues (that used to be their claim to fame), whether cheese or meat, are not only mediocre at best (I do know about fondues, having lived the first half of my life in France) and what you get for what you pay (approx. $30) is a sad joke. Nothing else comes with the fondues, no salad, no side dish... The cheese fondue had a mealy texture when it should be cheesy, soft & elastic; and the meat fondue came with barely enough meat and an absolutely awful assortment of boring sauces (including tartar & melted butter, which you would expect for fish but not red meat!!! How about some Béarnaise, French Mustard, Aoili, Spicy Mayo...etc. instead). What else to say: the service is impersonal, the lighting too dim (in fact, deficient in the back room), and the wines priced way too high. I first visited this restaurant some 20 years ago but I think I will now wait another decade before giving it a third try.
