A visit last Thursday to The Monterey Fishhouse was rewarding as always. The place was packed as usual, with potential diners waiting in doorways and out in front. Long experience had led to our calling for a reservation, so our wait was brief. Carlos, our waiter (he's been there 16 years, and is always warm, affable and knowledgeable), rattled off the day's specials...about a dozen of them...from which I chose the sea scallops (in a marvelous white wine, butter and garlic sauce) and crabcake combination, served with a lightly-sauced pasta and mixed vegetables. Judy had an excellent broiled mahi mahi. They have Santa Margarita pinot grigio by the glass, so our food was well-accompanied. There was one minor downside, however -- a chocolate mousse that seemed grainy.
