We had the nicest time at the Highlands Ranch Resort. The room was spotless and the radiant in floor heating in the bathroom was a welcome treat. We especially enjoyed the outside fire pit (make sure you look at this as it is stunning!) with red Adirondack chairs surrounding the circle. We rented snowshoes at the store across the street and loved breaking trail around the meadow.

Breakfast & dinner were both spectacular and exceeded our expectations. It was also nice to have a refrigerator on our room. We stayed in Night Hawk #6.

We stayed 3 nights - 2 in Meadows Edge and 1 in Timber Ridge. The cabins are lovely, clean and comfortable. The heated bathroom floors are a nice touch. We enjoyed sitting on the porch chairs and enjoyed the hot tub with the night sky. The star gazing is incredible.

The fireplace does a nice job of heating the room and adding a romantic flair.

The proximity to the national park 2 south entrances is a really big plus. They have a store on property with some snacks and other misc goods. The breakfast was quiet tasty. We were able to sit inside and enjoy. For dinner it was only outside seating - bundle up!! The dinner was ok, ate 3 nights and the hamburger and fries were our favorite. It’s not on the menu but know you can order one.

The wifi is only available at the lodge restaurant. Service was spotty in our cabin.

Erin and Tim treated us very well and helped make our stay enjoyable. Thanks for going the extra mile with our “to go” breakfast on our last night due to our Early departure.

Overall we were very pleased to find a nice place near the park.

Finally there is a wonderful place to stay near the under-appreciated Lassen Volcanic National Park. This resort has only seven rooms and a very large restaurant and bar (with diminished capacity during COVID). We had a separate cottage (all but two rooms are cottages) with fireplace, hot tub, porch and sleeping loft. The king bed was very comfortable. The entire place was exceedingly private and quiet. The included breakfast had a good selection. The bar had a great beer and wine menu. The dinner menu was limited but in three nights only one dish was disappointing. The filet mignon was particularly well prepared. Our only nit was that breakfast is not served until 8 (the confirmation said 7:30). We wanted to get an early start to climb Lassen Peak so earlier would have been better. Similarly, the box lunch was not ready until 9.

Room tip: We stayed in Meadow's Edge, the last cottage on the property.

Very well-maintained and modern small resort. Our cottage (Timber Ridge) was well-equipped with large shower, coffee maker, gas fireplace, heated bathroom floors and television. Small porch had comfortable adirondack chairs. For those of you with IAD (Internet addiction disorder), the wireless signal was mostly non-existent, and LTE was very weak. Setting is beautiful and relaxing, although given the smoke pollution from fires currently raging throughout California, the smoke from the evening group fire pit was not the best idea. The restaurant had lots of outdoor seating with views (including a very active hummingbird feeder), but the server's "almost as good as wagyu beef" recommendation oversold a flavorful but very tough and not cheap ribeye steak.

Room tip: Look at the map on their website to pick cottage further from Highway 36.

My husband and I just stayed at HRR, and we had a good time overall. The setting is picturesque and very close to Lassen Volcanic National Park. Watching the meteor shower from our own mini hot tub was very cool. The food at dinner was better than expected—especially the chocolate cake!

The staff needs better training, though. The receptionist wasn’t wearing a mask when checking us in or out. While showing us into our cabin, she put one on over her mouth, but not her nose. A manager sitting inside the lodge had his mask under his chin while interacting with staff and guests. Restaurant hostesses, servers, and bussers seemed inexperienced at service, resulting in some awkward moments.

Our cabin looked nice, like in the photos. We opened the windows overnight for a much-needed breeze, but we could hear noise from the road. If installing A/C isn’t an option, at least add shades on the upper windows so that sunlight doesn’t stream in early, waking up your guests and heating up the room. Cold drinks in the fridge (even water) would be a nice touch.

We were told that due to COVID, breakfast would be served in our cabin rather than the restaurant. (BTW, both lunch and dinner were served on the deck...why not breakfast?) Anyway, we were OK with a cold breakfast, but “fresh hand-cut fruit cup” turned out to be melon cubes; the coffee cake slice tasted dry/old; and the sticky bun had a hair baked into it.

We knew HRR would be rustic, but we selected it for the promise of luxury and premium amenities. Given the location, we relaxed our standards, but we still expected a level of thoughtfulness toward the guests’ experience. We’d love to see HRR live up to its potential!
