We took this trip as a Christmas break and it wasn't dependent on there being snow. You can have a wonderful time in the Mc Cloud/Shasta area without snow in the winter. There is so much to do. We took an easy hike up Mt. Shasta, carefully walked on a frozen lake, drove around the other side of Shasta, went to Lake Mc Cloud as well as exploring the abandoned milling location to name just a few things. It's so peaceful and scenic, and without snow, an easy drive from the Bay Area.
The Mercantile Inn was great. Loved how each room has a special name and each is decorated differently. We loved our room, it was basic but pretty and served our needs. Loved the tub. There was a communal area for coffee, tea and a fridge (which could maybe be a little bigger?!) and a lovelystove fireplace. So cosy.
For breakfast you go downstairs to attached diner which always hit the spot, then to make chosing where to go for dinner easy, there was only one place to go. You know what a dilemma that can turn into -deciding where to go for dinner? Less than 5 mins away was Aaraon's Lodge where we always had good food.
Mc Cloud was perfect for a relaxing break and the Mercantile Inn did not disappoint. Very friendly people, helpful and genuine. My husband & I would certainly return.

Room Tip: Check out the website.

We wanted to just get away. We do not ski, fish, hunt, hike, or bird-watch. We do like historical areas, good restaurants, and sites to see. We were not disappointed, and were we ever glad we stayed at the Mercantile Inn. We were welcomed like family and treated like family the entire time we were there. Kevin & his wife & son were the perfect hosts. We do a lot of traveling--domestic as well as international, and the Mercantile was one of our most positive memories. We stayed in the Charles Miller room and it has a terrific view of Mount Shasta. No snow, but who cares, we did not come for the snow. Picture-taking, that's my thing. In my business our reputation is largely based on how many customers call us back for more of our services. The same goes for hotels and motels. In our travels we do have a list of those places which we will never willing return to for a variety of reasons. With the McCloud Mercantile Inn, though, we are already tentatively planning our return visit. We highly recommend this excellent destination. A+++++

Room Tip: Each room has its own personality. We had a chance to look at a couple of the other rooms and each was great. I think, though, when we return we will stay in the Charles Miller room again. We would pick that one not just because it was big and had a fireplace, but because of the outstanding view of Mount Shasta we had each morning. Majestic! We woke up each morning with the smells of breakfast from the cafe right below us.

Among the many choices in the Mt. Shasta area, we love staying at the Mercantile. The rooms are beautiful, large and nicely appointed. The beds are terrific. Kevin and Darlene, the ever-present owners, are committed to the satisfaction of their guests. We also have a dog, who is always welcome.

I travel a lot for business. This was for vacation. I loved this place. It was not just the rustic room, that was big a clean, but mostly the service from Kevin, the owner. He made the entire stay enjoyable.

Room Tip: Ask Kevin.

My fiance and I decided to start a new tradition together this year and planned a Christmas get away. Neither of us had ever been to the Mt. Shasta area and we wanted a white Christmas. After looking a a bunch of reviews and inns online, we decided on the McCloud Mercantile Hotel. It had everything we could have asked for - beautifully appointed room with period decor, fireplace, romantic slipper tub, gorgeous bathroom with a decadent double headed shower and they even welcomed our dog to join us.

That wasn't the end of it though. The real charm of this place is the Mathis family, the proprietors. Each morning at breakfast in their attached diner, Lonnie Mathis, the patriarch of the family, worked the room with his easy going charm and warm smiles. He really made us feel welcome and brought a smile to the faces of all around. His charm is apparently hereditary, because it passed to his son Kevin who runs the inn. Kevin was really sweet and accommodating. He went out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed, including hand dipped strawberries and sparkling cider in our room upon our late check-in.

The final little piece of heaven came in the form of an impromptu Christmas feast the family put together for all of their guests, a few locals and extended family. I had to shake my head at one point during dinner because the whole thing seemed like a scene out of a very nostalgic Hallmark movie.

Needless to say, Dave and I are already planning our trip back there next Christmas and even reserved the same room already. This time we're planning on bringing some of our family with us and pitching in to the Mathis family's new tradition of Christmas dinner with their guests.

It was a perfect stay!
