OK, Thanksgiving in the desert, peak season, everything is expensive including here. We had a 2 queen casita with a private patio which was a great way to have our dog get some fresh air without worrying about other dogs or small children. I would call the decor in our room Spartan, and upon close examination, was definitely showing some wear. The carpet looked and felt a bit dirty, the blanket remnants (clearly for decoration only) at the end of the beds looked like they had never been washed. The nightstand between our two otherwise very comfy and clean beds, looked like it came from Target. But the room was spacious with a large flat screen tv, dresser and a small desk. The bathroom was spacious with lovey Mexican tile, but frayed bath towels, some with holes, are not worthy of $400 a night plus. And the rug on the bathroom floor again looked and felt dirty, so we rolled it up. The grounds are amazing and go on forever. They have multiple restaurants, shops, pools, activities, bikes.... but then it's things like charging $13 for a bag of Tates cookies that would cost $5 in a grocery store, or getting a room service bill for $60 for a $22 pizza and 2 small cokes....yikes! And lastly, yes it was Thanksgiving weekend, but we had to wait an hour past stated check in time to get our room as housekeeping was running behind....not good when you've been driving all day and you just want to lie down. Overall, it is a lovely place and I would go again....it's family friendly, dog friendly, would be great with a large group.....it's just little details that would tie it up with a bow. And seriously folks, $13????

Room Tip: go for the private patio rooms if you want some extra space to spread out

At $98 a head before tip, tax and drinks, we expected a special experience at their signature restaurant, Morgan's.. Like another reader, all three of us were very disappointed. First of all, the service was terrible. We waited a long time to have our food order taken. An inbetween treat was served and the waiter made no effort to explain what it was - he just laid it down, never looking at us or saying anything and then left. Secondly, before we were finished the appetizer, the main courses were served, and the server just moved my dirty plate to the side and laid down our main courses - pretty unappealing and he was not well trained. With all the dirty and main course plates still on the table, he then picked up the dirty dishes. I had halibut which was so dry and uninteresting that I did not finish it. The turkey my wife and daughter had was also pretty bland. At that point we looked at each other and said this meal was mediocre to bad, and the final bill came to over $413. What a lousy and disappointing experience.
We liked the rooms at the resort, but this supposedly hightlight Thankgiving dinner experience will mar our impression of the vacation.

Dear MartinLCannon,

That your dining experience at Morgan's in the desert was anything less than exceptional is unacceptable, and for that I apologize. We hold our restaurants to the highest standards of quality and service, and there is no excuse for shortcomings. Please know that I have shared your feedback with the restaurant's management team for thorough review and redress. I hope we have the opportunity to regain your confidence with a return visit that I am confident will exceed your expectations in every way.

Sincerely,
Katherine Stoker

La Quinta is such a great place to stay for the holidays. It is decorated for the season, activities for the kids and adults, holiday music playing throughout the resort and the staff is just incredible. A home away from home, where you get to decompress!

This is our 6th Thanksgiving at LaQuinta in 8 years. Where to start.....each year the experience has declined exponentially.

The check-in process was cumbersome—from waiting in an unorganized line, payment being required upfront, to being told there was an hour wait if we didn’t want to sit in the sun (we had made reservations a month in advance). It was almost 90 degrees on Thanksgiving.

The outdoor seating, with umbrellas, made for a nice setting, once the sun was no longer overhead. However, to access the buffet, you had to walk a considerable distance across an uneven surface, through a line of waiting diners and basically into a side door to the buffet. We commented that you could burn more calories than you consume just by getting your food.

The food was very good, but definitely not up to the selection and quality in years past. In the past there had been a crab cake station, prime rib and lamb. None of these dishes were available this year. The carving station staff was less than generous when serving the meats—it felt as if they were instructed to ration it.

The kids area in past years had fun activities and a much better selection of food items (chicken tenders, mac & cheese for $45 a plate - really?); kids table was so low (about a foot high) that the 11 year old in our party had to practically crawl to get her food. The same child asked for chocolate milk and was told there was none—but there was...in a carton at the kids table.

And now to the price. It was $82 for adults, $45 for children. This did not include beverages. There were 7 in our party. We certainly do not mind paying this amount for an exceptional experience. This was not.

UPDATE: My son-in-law called LaQuinta management to relay our experience since it differed from past Thanksgiving dinners. The manager was both gracious and generous in responding - and for that we say “Thank you, LaQuinta!”

Dear DOT2012,

Please accept my apology for your disappointing Thanksgiving dining experience. Though we pride ourselves on the quality of all that we offer our guests, clearly and regrettably we missed the mark with your party. I am pleased that that we were able to speak with your son-in-law to better understand those things we may have overlooked when it comes to guests' preferences. Thank you for the opportunity of allowing us to address your concerns directly, and we look forward to welcoming you back again for a truly exceptional guest experience.

Sincerely,
Katherine Stoker
