Whiie visiting our son in Palo Alto, we made a last-minute decision to visit Yosemite, I called Tenaya-we were given a “special rate of $299” plus tax for two nights for a king sized bed WITH a balcony. The rep failed to mention the $30 daily resort fee which is a joke as this is just as much a resort as a shopping mall in New Jersey.

First, the Tenaya Lodge is at least an hour and fifteen minutes of mountain driving from Yosemite Valley. We were told by the rep that we were 2 miles from the entrance to the park. True, but it is the wrong end of the park if you want to see the main draws.

We were put in a room directly, literally directly, above the lobby registration desk with an open air lobby. The room had NO balcony. The 3/4 gap between the door frame and the floor meant that all lobby noise, live music came wafting through like bad air. Speaking of bad air, the AC sounded like an aging locomotive. I walked in and just said “no” to my husband and turned around. I'm not usually that person. It was so gloomy I immediately felt bad for us. Defeated by a room.

I went back to the front desk and said we will check out tomorrow. She said “well, you will lose your final night payment.” I told her we were here for only two nights and that meant we had to pay for it? Wasn't there a 24-hour cancellation fee? No, two-weeks. We booked two nights ago. She shrugged. They gave us another room on the third floor. Exact same bleak room but it was quieter. (The website photos use a klieg light to make the room bright and cheerful. Imagine the rooms without the overhead white light.) While I was waiting to hear if we could get a refund (with 24-hour's notice-a standard at most big hotels like this one), another patron complained that they were supposed to get a balcony. Hotel rep said that would cost $75 more. Yep, it's that kind of place. The staff offered half the second night back to us-awful. We would still have to pay $190 for a room we didn't stay in. True resorts inspire, glow. This place glowers except for the gift and coffee shops where the staff are sweet.
$754 down the proverbial drain. Ugh. Two lessons if you go:
1. Make sure your reservation confirmation includes the rate, PLUS the resort fee. Ask what they other fees are. Our $299 a night room cost $377. GET THESE DETAILS IN WRITING!
2. DOUBLE check your final bill. We were charged $70 more because they made a room change from a bad room. Had to have a really unpleasant conversation at the front desk to get money refunded.
It's more expensive to stay in Yosemite Valley but that's where I would go next time.

Room tip: Do not get room 201, 301-they are above the lobby

Honeymoon Hotel 3 of 7

Tenaya Lodge was the second hotel we stayed in on our honeymoon, after travelling across form San Francisco it certainly was a change of pace.

Upon arrival we were able to park right at the front of the hotel and check in, we were looked after by Sonya who was amazing in sorting out our room and also agreed to follow up about an excursion we had tried to book ahead of time but with little luck. I am glad to say we arrived to our room a little later to find a letter confirming our booking onto the excursion so that was great news.

The hotel itself has so much to offer that if we were staying a bit longer or it wasn't next to Yosemite I really do think you could spend entire days just in the hotel, from indoor and outdoor pools and hot tubs to a games room with pool, air hockey and games consoles, fire & a free smore kit. A fantastic bar and restaurant and a talk in the evening from astrologers.

I cant mention the bar without giving a huge shutout to one of the barmen in particular, I asked and was told it may have been Anthony (Loads of tattoos and a really friendly guy) He really looked after us with drinks and food, we were never left wanting when being served by Anthony, he was also really engaging with a good local knowledge, a real credit to the hotel.

Sadly I cannot leave a fully positive review as there was a minor issue with a plug where the desk and chair were being squeezed in and had really bent the socket out of shape so we were very careful when using the lamp which was plugged into it but this really is a small thing to note across all of our stay.

With relation to the booking of the excursion this was a real irritation and whilst we were really happy to be able to go, ultimately for the two of us the overall cost vs experience was not proportionate and when we travel here again we will simply drive up and find a spot of our own.

The location is great for Yosemite with easy access to the main park about an hour away and other local activities like the Sugarpine Railroad. Overall a fantastic hotel that we felt sad when we had to leave

Beautiful area of all of the trees, so peaceful and quiet. One can enjoy nature's tranquility with the creatures. Watch the different waterfalls spray out with the moisture as wind whips through the streams. Look especially hard at El Capitan to see if you can see the ant people climbing up the walls.

Accommodations: We arrived the day after Labor Day for a two-night stay. Contrary to other reviews, we enjoyed an uncrowded hotel. The drive from Oakhurst is an easy, but windy, 13-mile drive. We arrived just before the 4:00 PM check-in time and were warmly greeted by the hotel front desk staff. We had reserved an "extended" two queen beds room which included a sitting area furnished with a full-size sofa, comfortable side chair, coffee table, and a desk with 2 chairs. Upon entering the room, we were surprised by the darkness but once the sliding door drapes were fully opened, it was a little bit better. The natural light falls primarily on the sitting area. As the room is elongated, the balance of the room is dark. Overall, the furnishings were adequate but older. However, all furnishings were without any tears or worn areas. The beds were very comfortable. We did not have any issue with noise in the neighboring rooms, except for the sound of flushing toilets. We opted out of daily housekeeping in exchange for nightly drinks. On the day we requested fresh towels, they arrived within 5 minutes. The bathroom was spacious enough for two. Our only complaint would be the low flush toilets. The water pressure was so low that you were required to flush several times after each use, thus defeating the water conservation aspect of the low flush units. During our stay, we overheard several guests with the same problem.

We originally booked our room for two nights but on the last night, we had had such a relaxing time, that we requested to add a third night. The front desk team member, Jess, enthusiastically made the necessary arrangments. Thank you Jess! I agree that the rooms are expensive but the location at the entry to Yosemite National Park along with the lodge's modern conveniences, can't be beat.

Dining: The grounds are beautiful and well-maintained. We enjoyed our evening drink in the Jackalopes Bar & Grill. We were served nightly by the bartender, AJ, a very personable gentleman. Although he was very, very busy, he always took a moment for pleasantries, even remembering our order from our first visit.

We had dinner all three nights in the Jackalopes Grill. Again, the outdoor dining location among the beautiful grounds, trees, and flowers is well worth the prices. We found our meals prepared well and promptly served with generous flavorful portions. On our last night, we were served by Justin, a delightful young man with a real flair for offering menu suggestions and item descriptions as well as a very friendly personality. One morning we tried the breakfast buffet which offered a nice variety of hot and cold items. Again, we had a very enjoyable interaction with our waitress, Laurie (sp?). She was very attentive and patiently answered our questions about things to do in the Oakhurst area. On the morning of our departure, Laurie saw us in the lobby and came over to wish us safe travels.

Yosemite Half-Day Tour: Our tour guide for this trip was Amanda. This is a terrific tour for those who want to enjoy the majesty of Yosemite Valley but still have time at the end of the day to enjoy the lodge grounds. Amanda is a true historian on Yosemite and had many interesting stories about her personal experiences as she was raised in Yosemite Valley. She knew so much about each and every stop. She was also readily available to answer any questions at different locations. Her pace for our tour was perfect. We had plenty of time to explore the different areas and take pictures. She shared with us the stories of the world-renowned climbers of El Capitan. Her information was so interesting that we watched the documentaries she mentioned about their feats within days of our tour. Quite inspirational!

Oakhurst: The closet town to the lodge is Oakhurst. Vons and Raley's are the markets in town. We took a few hours exploring the different souvenir and mercantile shops and found some nice items. Gas is rather pricey in the mountain area. I suggest you gas your vehicle at the Costco in Merced. The price was only $3.13 a gallon but over $4.00 in the mountains.

Summary: The fact that we added a third night to our stay is indicative of our very enjoyable experience at the lodge. I highly recommend this hotel not only for its wonderful location but for the excellent employees who go out of their way to ensure their guests have a pleasant stay. Without exception, the valets, shuttle drivers, front desk staff, the bar and dining staff, to the housekeeper who delivered our towels... each person was exceptional! This is a comment I do not make lightly.
