Very friendly shop keepers. some unique shops. They also raved of some local restaurants on Grand, but we had picnic lunch so didn't try the food.

This area has seen some great times and has lots of character. There is a glimmer of revitalization and recreation of the area. There are lots of eclectic stores and shops, and the city is poring lots into keeping events coming in to the area. A great place to check out and to stroll along.

We went to a pizza joint there and a Mexican restaurant as well while staying at Welk. What once might have been a truly 'grand' avenue is now reduced to a good number of vacant storefronts, some odd shops, a VERY good gem and mineral store, a few bars, and many establishments that were simply labeled CLOSED. There's a reptile shop next to a wig store which might make an interesting pair if combined. You can literally hear the paint crack from the dilapidated buildings as you walk the uneven sidewalk. The storefront pizza place was OK as was the Mexican cafe but there really is no good reason other than the gem shop to stroll down the avenue.

Grand Avenue is a wonderful little downtown area. There are many kinds of restaurants and cafes to try out. Many types of cuisine: Italian, French, Hawaiin, Salvadorian, Irish, American. There is a Farmers Market every Tuesday afternoon with lots of fresh produce, breads, sauces, plants as well as freshly prepared food to eat. During the summer every Friday night "Cruisin Grand " takes place which is an event that showcases classic cars from various eras. Shops and restaurants stay open late during this event.

Great al fresco dining, charming antique and crafts stores, a reptile shop, art galleries and more. On Fridays May through September, classic and antique cars line the road for Cruisin' Grand. On Tuesday afternoons and Saturday mornings, there is a Farmers Market. Spring and Fall bring street fairs, and the annual Christmas Parade ends here. A fun place to see and be seen, meet friends, grab a bite or a drink. Really the true center of Escondido.
