There is really nothing positive to say about this restaurant. The menu is uninspired, the owner was the waiter and spent much of our time complaining to the two cooks whom we unfortunately could see were confused. I had the eggplant, which was something akin to the sole of a shoe. The bread we served was of McDonalds bun caliber, and about halfway through the meal I noticed that the water glass from which I'd been drinking, and which the owner refilled, had a massive lipstick smudge on it. I lost whatever minute volume of appetite I had left. Avoid this place.

After reading Tripadvisor reviews and the restaurant's own web site, we made a reservation for dinner.

The entire evening was a debacle.

We had a reservation and the restaurant was virtually empty when we arrived, but they encouraged us to try the patio (a plastic tent with heaters). It was warm enough but slightly gloomy and you could smell cigarette smoke through the rips in the plastic from folk smoking in the parking lot .

The service was incredibly s-l-o-w.

We waited 1 1/2 hours to get our main course. The restaurant was full (maybe from out-of-town folk staying in Encinitas) and most of the tables were in the same situation as us. One large party, after drinks and bread ... and drinks and bread... finally gave up and walked out (but not before the waitress managed to catch the young boy in the face with the sharp corner of the menu and made him cry).

When the food f-i-n-a-l-l-y arrived, it was on cold plates and contained wrong items but after waiting so long, we just accepted it.

The ravioli with pesto was still hard and swimming in a white sea with green flecks. My friend couldn't finish it. We fell about laughing when the waitress asked if we wanted it boxed up to go.

The jumbo shrimp entree was basically 5 normal sized shrimp (each the size of a quarter), complete with tail and shell. Certainly not jumbo shrimp as I know them. These were coupled with a few steamed vegetables and pasta tubes (not potatoes as indicated). This meagre portion cost nearly $20.

The pasta with sausage and peppers was extremely bland and the only dish which was a decent sized portion and tasted good was the halibut.

They were also out of most of the decent beer and the wine by the glass tasted oxidised.

The waitress kept apologising and said they had a 'new kitchen' - whatever that meant.

The evening was such a fiasco, with people getting up to see where their food was and patrons having to help the waitress change the propane gas tank that we all ended up seeing the funny side of it. Seriously though, it was really, really bad.

When I got home I was curious to see when the newspaper reporter, who wrote the glowing review which is on the restaurant web page, visited. Unless there is someone of the same name, it appears that she died around 2004 so maybe her report is based on previous management.

Based on our visit it is certainly not this one!

The Union-Tribune wrote: "This tiny gem of a restaurant has built a loyal following based on fine food at reasonable prices served in a sophisticated atmosphere." Gusto is our favorite Encinitas restaurant exactly for those reasons - we feel we're in Italy when we're dining here. It warm, quiet and the food is superb; one of the owners is always present to greet and perhaps serve you. Terry likes the fact that wine is half price Monday - Wednesday. Tell Irwin, the owner, that the Inn at Moonlight Beach recommended you and they will have a "special something" for you.
