Super charming European style accommodations. Hotel has a lot of deferred maintenance when you look closely. Gruff check-in procedure in bar could have been friendlier. Shared bathroom setup for most rooms. Shared baths were not as clean as I'd like. Charming rooms and furnishings, good food, court yard seating on patio was nice. Interesting vibe in town and very out of the way.

Room tip: I stayed in room #10 that overlooked the main street. Very light and bright!

An hour away from Yosemite National Park, this ancient hotel sits cozy with its haunted stories doing the rounds. I was there in May 2012 for the Memorial Day weekend when everything closer to the park was sold out or too expensive. The rooms were neat and clean and the shared baths were clean and well-maintained. I didn't try the restaurant though. The staff were friendly and will even play a prank or two on you to reinforce the haunted stories :) No TVs, this is an out-in-the-boondocks experience in remote Coulterville which is but a ghost-town pit-stop on the way to Yosemite. I don't think I even found batteries in the local store! There is a pub right next door, so that might keep you up a while if you tuck in early (like me) but it might be fun if you are the pub-type. Tip: Don't take CA-120 up steep slopes to Yosemite, follow the winding backdoor path - ask anyone at the hotel.

We stay in the hotel with my three sisters, and we had the best experience in our live. We also went to the kitchen of the Restaurant Bar to cooked with the Chef. We love our stay and we have plan to be there soon!

I am 71years old.My daughter and i came to the hotel on july 4th and 5th.The first night on July 4th .The room tempt. at nine oclock was 89.It never cooled down the whole night. We found out that it had no air condition.Itwas cooled by a swamp cooler.A lot of good that did.We came back the next evening around 5 30 to see if they could cool the rooms down. The two rooms were just like the night before. We complained to the manager and they did nothing. We left and went back to my daughters home.I came all the way from Irving Texas. We paid 184.00 a night.;I tried to get a hold of the owner but no luck.We also spent over 50.00 for dinner at this hotel on Friday evening.I have traveled all over the U.S. and never had this type of experience.James Sanders.

Sara Z, Owner at Hotel Jeffery, responded to this reviewResponded 12 July 2014

The hotel was built in 1850 and we advertise our hotel as not having central air conditioning and during the day in severe heat conditions (which we have been having) the swamp coolers that we have don't keep the hotel as cool as we would like but during the night they do keep the rooms cool and we have ceiling fans in all the rooms.
We were made aware that one of the guests felt that the room was too hot when they arrived during the day and we let them know that it would cool down during the night. The next day the key was dropped off and they left without staying the additional night. We would have refunded the second night if they had let us know early enough so that we could have rented it out.
We are sorry their experience wasn't a peasant one and should they ever come back to the area we will be happy to provide them with a night at no charge.

Let me start by telling you that this review is for the dining room only, not the accommodations.

We have family in the area and they had called to make reservations in the dining room specifically. They were told not a problem, check in at the bar also attached to the Hotel and we would be seated in the dining room. We did that and were told to take a seat and they would be right with us.

Here is where the 15 minute journey starts. We took a seat, waited and waited and waited some more. While we were waiting for menus and someone to simply bring water, Mr. B cleaned cob webs off the tablecloth and Uncle B, blew dust out of his water glass. We continued to wait, still no one showed up. About 15 minutes in to our waiting, a man comes out of the kitchen, sweaty and wearing a white tank shirt. He asks if we have been helped, we tell him no, but we did check in at the bar and someone was suppose to be coming. He grunts, Ok and goes back in the kitchen. We waited a few more minutes and just couldn't take it any longer, with the dirty tableclothes, dust in the glasses and lack of any kind of service, we leave and wander down to Coulter Cafe.

While we waited, two other couples came in and waited for someone to help them, when they got no assistance, they too walked out. It really is a shame, it is a cool spot with a lot of history.

Save yourself and do not eat at Hotel Jeffrey.

Room tip: Due to the lack of service in the dining room and no one attending the front of the hotel, anyone can just walk up the stairs to the rooms. Hotel and restaurant really gave me the creeps and I wouldn't stop ever.
