The situation of this hotel set in lovely gardens and just above the beach is lovely but sadly the accommodation and food are most disappointing. We had an exceptionally small room at an elevated tariff. It was a surprise to find no proper restaurant and the bar was understaffed. The breakfast was enjoyable and I had a good swim although the pool was rather small for the size of the hotel. More attention to comfort and food would greatly improve the attractions of La Playa.

Rachel T, General Manager at La Playa Carmel, responded to this reviewResponded 12 April 2018

Dear 888anthony:

Thank you for taking the time to share with us your experience. I could not agree with you more when you talk about our lovely gardens. At this time of year our gardens are in full bloom and we have plenty of seating for our guests to enjoy the grounds.

I was disappointed to hear that you felt our accommodations and food were lacking. Being a historic hotel our rooms vary in size and some, as you mentioned, may be a little smaller than others. In hopes of addressing these concerns we have created so many areas for guests to gather and feel like they are at home.

888anthony, thank you again for sharing your experience. Do know that if you decide to return to Carmel you may reach out to me directly for assistance.

Warm Regards,
Rachel

I was a little intimidated at first but this place is so nice. Yes a little dated but charming and the service was phenomenal. Made us feel like VIPs. Beautiful property and a shuttle that takes you to restaurants.

Room Tip: Ask for view of ocean

Such a nice setting. Close to the beach and located in a residential neighborhood. I wish I could give it more stars, but it falls short in several categories. My room was pricey per other reviews and was very tiny. Unfortunately, the room was situated next to a street and traffic noise was constant. In addition, the only way to the room was through the outside and no umbrella was offered on a very rainy day. Noise from adjoining rooms and the ongoing slamming of staff-entrance doors led to a sleepless night. The evening wine tasting pushed local wines at the expense of good wines and did nothing to contribute to the luxury brand experience this hotel desperately wants to create. No fitness center and no real restaurant. The bar is nice and perhaps the best thing about the hotel. Better wines and good bar food. A very young staff is not well trained. An example? I finally called to get an umbrella, but once delivered, the staff member told me that he didn't need one, since the staff could use the staff entrance and avoid the rain. Good enough for the staff, but not the guests?? Too bad the guests are not a priority!

The room was quite small, but the hotel was big on charm. The staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel had a van to take you around town and pick you up - at no charge. But, we often walked back to the hotel because it was so beautiful. The hotel also offered a free breakfast each morning. My daughter and I were there for leisure and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

2nd stay at La Playa for a very special occasion and the hotel went above and beyond to make us feel special. Many thanks to Sophie at check-in! We love La Playa and consider it a home away from home. The team at La Playa are all nice and make you feel extra special. Love their amenities like the amazing breakfast, evening shuttle to the best local spots, wine hour and warm cookies at night! One of our favorite places we have stayed in the entire world. Can't go wrong with a long weekend at La Playa in beautiful Carmel.
