“Overall a great experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 May 2011

The West (as they call it when they answer their phone, not to be confused with Westin :) is a great location right off the I-5 and the same exit as Legoland. If you're looking for a "quiet" resort atmosphere, this is not it. That's not to say the hotel isn't nice - it's wonderfully kept, all the amenities you'd need (heated pool, workout room (wouldn't call it a gym), gracious welcoming lobby, sumptous complimentary breakfast). Just know that there are NO rooms with a view. There is also a restaurant on site (breakfast is not in the restaurant, it's a separate area in the hotel) that's apparently quite good. There's also a seafood restaurant across the parking lot. Parking is free and plentiful. There's a gas station adjacent to the hotel as well.
Other things to do in the area besides Legoland is visiting the flower farm (just go see it - 1/4 mile rows of bright flowers), outlet mall to get various knick-knacks that you may have forgotten, restaurants (we ate dinner at PF Changs) of all varieties.
The complimentary shuttle to/from Legoland is a very good idea. Just be sure to reserve the time slot (and be on it otherwise you'll be waiting for the next avail slot). Save $12 in parking - you get dropped off within walking distance of the main entrance.
Rooms are large - we had one with two kings and there was enough room to walk around and drop your bags. Bathroom was very well appointed. As I mentioned before - don't expect any views from most of the rooms (you won't be in them to enjoy it anyway).
Hotel is a good 30 min ride from Sea World, a few mins more for SD Zoo and Old Town SD - I recommend dinner there after a day at zoo or Sea World.
Breakfast is plentiful (although they ran out of regular toast on our second day) offering three hot items, bagels, croissants, pastries, breads, two juices typically, three cereals (no boxes), oatmeal, fruit assortments incl strawberries and of course, many different teas and coffee varieties. Good start to a long day at a theme park.

Room Tip: None of the rooms have views,so don't fret it.

We stayed in Carlsbad overnight after spending the day at Sea World with plans to visit Legoland the next day. This hotel is located perfectly - near the beach and near Legoland. There is a restaurant adjacent to the hotel and it was delicious. The hotel itself is beautiful. The rooms are very spacious with two comfortable king size beds. The hotel puts out cookies and milk at night and offers a hot breakfast in the morning. The hotel staff was friendly and parking was plentiful. I highly recommend this hotel.

Just spent a week there, since were primarily there for Legoland. Even though it's outside of San Diego, you can get to downtown in 30 minutes. It took us just under 30 minutes to get to Sea World. I used tripadvisor to choose this hotel, and was not disappointed.

I'll mention some things I haven't seen in the other reviews.

Hits-
1) The rooms and hotel are very nicely decorated. It's got sort of a Bali/Indonesian tropical vibe to it. It felt similar to our $350 rooms in Hawaii.
2) The pool area had inflatable tubes, kickboards, and magazines for guests. Even ice water and cups.
3) They will provide towels for you to go to the beach.
4) Customer service as everyone else mentioned, was great. Super clean place.
5) We put the privacy sign on the door. Every day, there was a basket full of new towels, soaps, and shampoos outside our door when we got back.
6) The restaurant next door, West Bistro, is very good. We arrived on a Saturday, and since we didn't have reservations, had to wait, but only for about 20 minutes. Filet mignon beef stroganoff was good.
7) Pretty well soundproofed. I couldn't hear the highway at all.
8) On a day they served potatoes for breakfast, an elderly guest complained to the breakfast staff that she wanted pancakes or waffles. The hotel worker was happy to offer her pancakes, though it would take a few minutes. I thought that was pretty pushy of the guest, but was impressed that the hotel staff was so accommodating.

Misses-they are all small gripes
1) You can still hear the train, although it's not very loud-see #7 above. I woke up due to the train the first night, but after that, it didn't bother me. I'm a pretty light sleeper though.
2) The cookies (for the nightly cookies and milk) could have been better. Sorta generic tasting. I think even Nestle toll house from the grocery store are better. Then again, I'm pretty picky about my chocolate chip cookies.
3) No waffles, even though we were there for a whole week. Eggs are very cafeteria-like.

But overall, was worth the extra 30 bucks that I was planning to spend on a lesser hotel. I think the bump up in service and quality is worth it.

Once again, TripAdvisor didn't disappoint. The West Inn & Suites was exactly what we were hoping for and expected. My husband and I were initially hesitant to book our stay here because of the rate that started from $150 per room (we usually get rooms in the $120-$140 range), but the deal clincher was the daily buffet breakfast. And as the days of our stay (we stayed for four nights) go by, we found more and more reasons to love this quaint boutique hotel.
And now for my list which I will limit to only ten reasons..but I can go and on...
1. Very clean and well-appointed rooms, bathrooms (Bed was very comfortable and afforded us all our best nights of sleep). Flat screen tv's with DVD players and game console connections.
2. Excellent and very warm customer service from the staff - from the front desk staff, to housekeeping, and the breakfast room ladies (except one who had a perpetual frown on her face which can be easily ignored.)
3. Buffet breakfast (sausages, bacon, waffle, french toast, scrambled eggs, and more...). Coffee was even at par with the more popular brands.
4. The moment you enter the lobby you are enveloped by a scent that instantly relaxes you. I overheard one guest ask the front desk staff about it and was informed that the hotel pumps an aromatherapy scent into their vents exactly for that reason - to calm and relax their travel-weary guests.
5. Free milk and chocolate chips every night
6. Laundry machines on site
7. Free parking, free wi-fi, free use of the business center
8. Heated swimming pool with free clean towels that were as sweet smelling as our towels in the room.
9. Welcome chocolates upon arrival (maybe insignificant compared to the rest of the amenities but it showed a lot of thoughtfulness on the part of management for me).
10. I don't know how to describe the theme of the decor but it made me feel very at home.
Oh yeah, it is also a short drive to Legoland, the Carlsbad outlets, and the beach (two blocks), the Carlsbad Village with its treasure trove of restaurants,
To end, I have to point out and counter what another reviewer used as a negative against West Inn - its proximity to a power plant and the train tracks. Once you have experienced the warm hospitality of the hotel's service staff and the comforts of their rooms, these factors can easily be overlooked. Granted, guests can hear the occasional train going by or the power plant's smokestack billowing white smoke, we were happily ensconced in our clean, comfortably-furnished room that we didn't notice these so-called negative factors.
Thank you, West Inn & Suites, for giving us a wonderful experience in Carlsbad - our first trip to Legoland.
We will definitely recommend you to our friends and we hope to return someday.
