one of the few places where you can get great lunch for 3 people under $15. The hot dogs were excellent including the rolls. The store had been in the news recently following the Charlottesville incidents, and there was a TV camera and crew outside. The staff politely asked them to move on

Terrific choice of excellent dogs, grilled to order, served on a grilled sesame roll. Don't miss the super spicy Russian mustard. And who doesn't love a hot dog place that has libertarian propaganda plastered all over its walls? In Berkeley of all places!

Grew up in Berkeley and been eating these since I was a kid in the 60's...

Gotta have my "two Tops, please"!

Don't expect much in the way of service - the folks behind the counter may or may not be friendly (the latter more often than the former); the place will be basically clean, but this is not fine dining. Get your Tops and go eat outside some where you can enjoy them in peace. Or sit along the window counter and watch the show outside on the street.

There is also South Side on Durant and Lakeshore in Oakland, which is new. Lakeshore was a strange experience. The woman behind the counter was very "sales-y" trying to sell me a "deal". The store itself is very "upscale" compared to other Top Dogs, but the dogs were the same and that's all I care about!

Back in the '80s my brother went to Cal Berkeley and a bunch of us would go to the Top Dog shack near People's Park. Decades later I was driving through Berkeley and noticed a branch of Top Dog. The food brought back tons of happy memories of a bunch of hungry late teenagers chowing down multiples of bratwursts, frankfurters, hot links. The food is still excellent as ever, the sausages had good snap and were juicy and flavorful, and the buns were firm and crusty as it was back then. Happy to know the classic endures and the quality remains!

Top dog does make pretty good sausages, but why go here when you can go to Rosamunde grill like 3 miles away in Oakland (like just down Telegraph Ave which is like 1/2 a block from this place) and have a better one?

I guess convenience is a factor. They serve this "dog" in their signature sourdough hoagie thing, which is not that great and definitely too much bread. Also one time I gave them money and they said they're closing, and said they owe me a dog later.

How about just gimme my money back?
