If you are looking for a change from the big corporate hotels, this is absolutely the place to be! We loved it So much, we booked a second stay during the same trip!

Every so often you find an individual who makes your trip into a memorable event. However, it’s extremely rare to find a group of people like the staff at the Idwala Boutique Hotel in Johannesburg, South Africa.

From the moment we arrived we were greeted as if we were long-lost family. The warmth and genuine sincerity of the staff is unbelievable. Jeanette, the owner, went above and beyond to make sure our accommodations were taken care of and she was there to greet us upon our late arrival.

George, who always had the best smiles for us, kept the fires roaring and made sure the grounds were safe and secure.

Maria and Sandra went out of their way to treat us like family and take care of our every need.

Last but not least we have Chef Paul! When I sent my complements to the Chef for a wonderful meal, I never expected to make a friend. It’s rare that I find someone who shares my love for food. Paul has such a passion for cooking that his enthusiasm is contagious. His peppered steak and his prawn dish is So good it will make your eyes roll back in your head and your leg twitch! It doesn’t matter what Paul is making because “This Foodie” will Always show up to eat whenever he is cooking!

Combine all of this with a century old main house and lodge rooms to match and you have an authentic feel of Africa tucked away inside the city.

We can’t wait to come back!!!

Thank you for a wonderful experience,
Jonathan & Lara

Room tip: All the rooms are good.

The staff is extremely friendly & well trained. The rooms are very nice & clean. The garden can be far much better & the walkways need sweeping.

One big mistake this place shouldn't be listed as a Hotel...its not a Hotel at all rather it is a Lodge. This is very important because it is giving it a wrong perception.

From the moment that my husband and I arrived at Idwala, we knew our stay was going to be extra special. Jeanette Friese is on hand always to make sure you feel important and valued. Nothing was ever too much for her and she attends to us as if we were family.
The large main house lounge area has roaring log fires and soothing music to add warmth and elegance.
Our room was massive, and comfortably furnished with an extra length king-size bed, crisp cotton linen, feather duvet, flat screen TV (selected DSTV channels), underfloor heating (a treat in winter) bar fridge, coffee station with complimentary tea, coffee and homemade biscuits as well as bottled water and complimentary Wi-Fi. The bathroom is luxurious, complete with bath, a large shower, bathrobes, heated towel rails and L’Occitane en Provence toiletries.
There is a small rock pool, as well as a truly splendid outdoor boma area where we enjoyed our sundowners and later relaxed around the firepit as the chilly evening settled in.
The food is exceptional and the chef Paul is a master of his craft. The menu is not over complicated with a great selection. Our three-course dinner was delicious and breakfast was just as good!
If you’re ever in the area pop in for a dinner or make a breakfast date soon. Next time, give the big hotels a skip and stay at Idwala. Your every need will be seen to and you will leave well fed!

Idwala Hotel is an exceptional beautiful place. A peaceful oasis to enjoy away from busy centres and mass tourism waves. Delicious food both in breakfast and the restaurant. Highlights of the breakfast were the muffins. The Spingbok was extremely good. The cottages and garden houses were like a fantastic African village setting. Will return to Idwala!!

I attended a small seminar which took place in the well equipped and comfortable seminar room. Arrival coffee and warm muffins splendid . A pity that the morning was spoiled by the presentation of the main course for lunch on cold plates

Thank you for writing about your experience at Idwala recently. I am so pleased to hear that you found our conference room comfortable and to hear that you enjoyed the freshly baked muffins we always serve, however I must say I am quite mortified to hear that your lunch was served on a cold plate! This is something we are usually very particular about and I quite agree that it spoils a meal if the plate is cold. I will look into this and can assure you that if you return you will not be given a cold plate!!
Best wishes from Jeanette and the Idwala Team.
