This is a small establishment with just 5 motel units. The one we had was well presented and had reasonable space and had comfortable lounge and the bathroom was a decent size and bright.

It was nice to receive a block of chocolate waiting on our arrival, and that went a bit too quickly. The price of the accommodation was nothing short of great, there is not many places of this quality for this low rate.

My review ratings try to be consistent and usually only allocate a 5 in the circumstances described below.. Any that I give a 3 rating are good and am happy to stay there again. Accommodation that is comfortable with good quality furniture and fittings that are similar to home environment are more likely to get high ratings. These usually have a separate lounge with comfortable seating, a well-equipped kitchen, a dining area and a bedroom that is not cramped. Free Wi-Fi is also desirable.

Unlike Castlemaine and Maryborough, the traffic on the Pyreness Hway right outside just about disappears at 6pm, and peace descends upon the bushy green landscape of my old hometown of Newstead. I was here (Hilliers Street) when the foundations were being poured for the motel decades ago. It was quiet then, as it is quiet now and will remain so. Newstead has never wanted nor desired to become a bustling tourist town, and it serves well as a relaxing whistlestop for coffee or chops, or an overnight stay. And here it is!

This little dig of five neat and comfy units punches way above its weight for $80 a night, and a wonderful welcome awaits by way of friendly Cameron. My unit was No. 4 and home comforts were plenty: a comfy bed (with electric blanket; extra blankets are at hand), a big-screen TV, a kettle, toaster, fridge and microwave. What more could a bachelor want?

The night wasn't cold so the electric blanket found no use. Up next morning for an early departure, and I actually had a tinge of sadness for leaving the enjoyable, restful experience behind for the return to the concrete jungle.

An enjoyable first impression made all the more better with friendly and approachable owner/manager Cameron.

• Brekky is not served. Get your tucker at welcoming The Dig cafe, 10 minutes walk up the road.

Room tip: Five units with space for one car out the front.

My wife and I and our single travelling partner stayed here in adjoining rooms on 11 & 12 March 2017. The management are very friendly and accommodating. The rooms had everything we needed and more, and were clean and felt very homely. We certainly intend staying there in the future as it is very central to visiting all the Central Victorian towns.

Room tip: A small 5 room Motel, all rooms would be quiet and similar

Thank you for providing a good country motel on a busy weekend
The room was well appointed with a normal size bar of soap😀rather than some of the excuses that other places provide
A great welcome on arrival too
