Another great visit

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 1 Apr 2018via mobile
This was my 8 time visiting the Barceló Bavaro palace or the new name Barceló Bavaro Grand Resorts, I stay this time for a whole month and trust me the improve everything every year I go, and the really care about the tourist, I love the rooms, the restaurant, the staff. This time a have a struggle with Mother Nature because some days look awesome but other was a super stormy day but despite that I enjoyed everything. My typical day in the resort is this I woke up at 7 and I walk the entire resort and change from asphalt to sand and made about 16 or 18miles so I returned to my room take a shower and go straight to the buffet ( I love both of the buffet but my preferred is the Bohío Dominicano) because I have long time going I know a lot of the staff everywhere but in this buffet is Leonardo Pimentel is one of the waiter ( I know him from 6 year ago) is a super excellent person and really kind always take care of us, the staff in the restaurants are super friendly and always have a smile for you the food is great so I finish my breakfast and go to the beach and return to my beautiful room in building number 5 and I prepare to go to one of the 7 restaurants and enjoy a excellent dinner ( the stake house and Japanese are my favorite) a quick tip if you go to the resort in March or finishing March and starting April remember in some countries is spring break and holly week and the resort is all booked from tourist and locals so the reservation for the restaurants are crowded in early hours and probably your dinner could be at 10 pm instead of 7:30 pm and is the same tip for book your room.
If my dinner reservations is earlier when I finish I go to the cigars shop La Hamaca and smoke a good Dominican hand made cigar ( remember you’re not in your country an some of the prices look very high but you’re in a 5 stars hotel and Punta Cana is a tourist area so it will be more expensive than your home country) I know this store when was in the plaza Dominicana about 8 years ago and they have the best cigars and brands, they made my own cigars, so I go to the theater and enjoy one of the shows ( they have one different every night) they have a bar in there! If you want to enjoy something else you can book a excursion or a tour with the people of vacaciones Barceló I made all the tours and excursions ( my favorite is Bavaro runners) in a few words this is my favorite place for beach vacation and I love this place!! I want to thanks the staff of premium level (except for this guy with glasses was very rude with my mom for making a question) and Ms. Sara Ulloa for taking care of us every year, and to Leonardo Pimentel and Carolina Barett in the bohío Dominicano! Thanks for everything and see you soon!

This resort is by far the worst I have ever been to, and I have traveled extensively. The facility is pretty but the service is horrible. They call this an all inclusive but it really should be called "semi-inclusive". They say wifi is free. It's only free in casino and spa (places where you are spending money.) It's only free at those places from 4 am to 4 pm. Very little English is spoken at the resort. Many in my group could speak Spanish but if you can't you might run into problems. The staff seemed annoyed if you needed anything.

Check in:

The check in staff was extremely rude. The manager treated my group terribly.

Food:

Room service is an up charge. This is a real problem because many people in my group had stomach issues from the food. You aren't allowed to take any food out of the buffet and back to your room even if someone is sick. So if you don't feel good you basically have to buy food at this resort. Food is not readily available 24 hours a day like a traditional all inclusive. There is no food available at the pool or beach. Most resorts have a beach grill or pool service. And since you can't take food out of the buffet, you have to go in. And then guests steal your beach chairs.

Drinks:

Very hard to get any drinks at the bar unless you are waiving money at the bartender.

Rooms:

The rooms are clean, but the service is terrible. Towels are not always replaced. We called one day because we literally had no towels other than 2 small washcloths. We waited a half hour and called again asking for 4 towels. I showered after the second call and just dried off with a washcloth because I needed to get going. My daughter came up from the pool after the second call while I was in the shower. They brought 2 towels. She said we asked for 4. The attendant YELLED at my daughter and said why do you need more towels because you have already showered (her hair was wet from the pool). Could not have been more rude. My daughter is almost fluent in Spanish and clearly told the attendant in Spanish that she had wet hair from the pool and please bring more towels. They didn't. Unacceptable

Clubs:

The kids in my group who were over 18 went to the disco. They all had wristbands indicating they were over 18. The bouncer yanked many of these girls by the arm to the point where it hurt in order to check how loose the wristband is, not just whether it was the correct color. Unacceptable to treat paying guests this way. These girls were well behaved but manhandled by staff.

Dinners:

Unless you are concierge level, you really can't get into a restaurant before 10:30 at night. I have never run into this at any other all inclusive. We had to eat at the buffet for most meals.

Kids water park, mini golf, and bowling:

Every one of these amenities is an up charge. This resort really isn't a true all-inclusive.

miscellaneous:

Basic things aren't included. If you want to weigh your luggage before heading to the airport, you have to pay for it. It's clear that the staff expects a lot of tips. No wait staff at the beach at all. Minimal wait staff at the pool. You get one beach towel and if someone steals your towel you are out of luck unless you find an extremely understanding towel attendant.

We have friends who stayed at other resorts in Punta Cana and they had a great experience. If you want to visit Punta Cana go to Hard Rock or Iberostar

El hotel provee bastante entretenimiento, pero la calidad y variedad de la comida es deficiente. They don’t have food alternatives for people with gluten, dairy or eggs intolerances. The staff is not very friendly or customer oriented.

The layout of the hotel, restaurants, and bars is very good. The food was below average, and there was no bbq/food available at the pool/beach for lunch (you had to go inside). The language barrier was an issue with most of the staff.

Our family decided on Barcelo in Punta Cana to meet for our Spring Break trip. We have stayed with Barcelo before and we were not disappointed again. The staff really make this all inclusive property feel like a home away from home. Felix with guest services started us off on the right foot and helped us feel comfortable, registered our dinners and gave us all around great advise. Julia ensured we stayed hydrated poolside and our 7 day stay ended with Yadira Santos ensuring our stay was all that it could be and gave us a warm send off back home.

The resort is all inclusive. There are ample buffet services with just about anything you could want from fresh fruit, pre-prepared food and fresh to order. Lots of local foods and comfort foods from home. Much nicer than a lot of the buffet's here in the states. Some people are critical about the buffet; however, I also think that some people need to manage their expectations. I strongly suggest making reservations for the many restaurants on the property for evening dinners, and make them early in your stay. Please keep in mind that these restarants are not buffet and do have dress codes of pants, closed shoes and nice shirts. Sorry, no flip flops and shorts for the nicer dinners.

The main buildings were a hub of activity all day but especially so in the evening. Shops, bars, casino, disco and restaurants were bustling. Each night the staff do an after dinner show in the auditorium that easily seats 1000 to 1500. It is open air, and surprisingly there were no bugs to be found.

On that note the resort property is very clean. We did not do the premium level services, as we really focused on disconnecting and enjoying the distance and disconnect. If you are connected or need to be, it might be worthwhile to consider the premium upgrade for internet services alone. Without it, wifi is $10 a day. Free wifi is available for defined hours in the spa and casino bar. Did we mention the staff was phenomenal!?

Our only real disappointment with the whole experience was with a very disruptive group/party. Security did intervene and require night managements attention. They did the best they could with the situation at the time, and we were contacted promptly by the property managers early the next morning. I should also note that the legal drinking age is 18 as is the age for gambling in the casino and certainly contributed.

With that said we still enjoyed the property, the amenities and the rooms. There are three distinct kids swimming areas, which are generally separated by age group with age appropriate activities. There is mini-golf, laser tag, an escape room and tons of water activities. A "train" tram circles the property regularly and is reliable enough to utilize it for getting across property for dinner reservations. Even the family side has an adults only pool, with cabana's and it's own bar.

There is so much on this property that there is really no reason to leave... as is the point. We left once, to go offshore fishing. Although not required, cash tips go a long way in thanking your servers, cleaners and staff for their hard work and attention to detail. I highly recommend keeping some $1 bills on you at all times to show your appreciation when it is warranted.

Our room was two bedroom, with a king bed with outside Jacuzzi tub on the private balcony and a double queen bed room with another balcony separated by a shared bathroom. They bathroom was recently renovated and was cleaned properly every day. The mini-bar was stocked with family friendly and adult items. The safe was easy to use and program for storing valuables while out of the room.

Should we decide to return to Dominica, for personal leisure or for business getaways, we will certainly give this specific property a solid consideration. Again, I cannot emphasize how friendly the staff were during our stay. Good job.

Room tip: Family deluxe rooms are near the kid pools... good if you have younger kids... maybe not so much if you don't.
