Marong is a wee town at one end of the Calder Alternative Highway near Bendigo. It’s famous for nothing but is a road to many places. We were driving back to Melbourne from the Silo Art Trail in the Wimmera Mallee and liked the look of this place from the outside. In we went, the publican is extremely friendly and efficient as are the staff. The menu was the first clue. One whole page devoted to vegetarian options and another to the house specialty, lamb. Two had vegetarian dishes and one lamb. The food is good restaurant quality. It was delicious with good sized portions in the traditional pub way. This pub is no secret to locals for they poured in to fill two dining areas. The wines are very good local Bendigo variety. It is a pub so drinks are ordered at the bar. The experience was so unexpected and the food worth travelling for. Time your trip to coincide with a meal time here. In giving an excellent rating it is the context of what it is, a pub.
