After more than a week in less than stellar hotels across Mali, I was looking forward to Hotel Kanaga. It was supposed to be so nice. It was a big let down. Everything looks nice on the surface, but look close enough, and you'll see the problems. The bathroom was the nicest I'd seen in sometime. Marble tiles, beautiful vanity, plush Tommy Hilfiger towels. I couldn't wait to stand in a nice hot shower and steam up the whole room. Lo and behold, there was NO HOT WATER!!! I'd just left a crappy room in Dogon Country that was a definite dive, but at least there was hot water. How dare this "fancy" place not have hot water. Also, those plush, white towels had dirt stains on them. That was a real turn off. They were probably clean, but given how dusty Mali is, they should have been thoroughly bleached too. When I closed the bathroom door, there was a huge pile of dust/dirt behind it.

The food at the restaurant was okay, nothing to write home about. We'd wanted to sit out by the pool at lunch, but were told we had to eat inside in this huge ballroom (just the three of us). Then at dinner, we went back to the ballroom, but were told we had to eat outside by the pool. Now it's evening and the mosquitoes were out. What sense did that make?

The staff was friendly and very helpful.

This hotel was right off the main river and was set in a very pretty location. It was just a few minutes walk from some of the markets but wasn't in the main area so it was a great place to get away and relax. The hotel staffw as EXTREMELY friendly and helpful. The rooms were comfortable but nothing extrodinary, just a good place to lay your head. The bathrooms were nicely decorated, small, and with only standup showers. The pool and lounge area was beautiful.

Overall, it was expensive for the area, but was a very nice and comfortable location.

My husband and I stayed here for one night during our week stay in Mali. It was actually one of the better class hotels we stayed at in Mali, where you really need to lower your standards of expectation. But given that it was touted as such a top hotel, we were disappointed in a number of ways. First, the positive attributes: nice location, relatively good food served buffet style (no free wine like another reviewer noted, and certainly no creme caramel!), and the hotel staff were friendly. The negatives: the wifi only worked in the courtyard/bar area, where there were a lot of mosquitos, and to be honest, it was a very weak signal that worked less than half the time. The hotel desk sign says that it accepts visa, but one of the staff said otherwise. The shower did not have much hot water.

Room Tip: Bring your own bottled water. Try a panisse trip across the road. It is beautiful at sunset.

It's a shame what could very easily be considered the best hotel in the Mopti region remains as another low budget option. Yes, bathrooms here are very clean. Yes, rooms here look almost western. Yes the swimming pool and the restaurant also look very poshy. But don't be mistaken. Service is just below Mali average. At least other cheap hotels do not pretend what they're not. We asked for an official guide and got some sort of hustler without any credentials that ripped us off the minute he was far from the hotel (MOPTI TOURS, by the way). As for location, the hotel is right by the Niger, without views (which you actually prefer: no mosquitoes!). The meals at the restaurant are very good.

This is a beautiful hotel located right across the road from the river so the setting and location are amazing. It is very modern but the rooms are a bit small. The food is excellent the rooms very clean. We were happy with our stay here.

The staff was really nice. My husband accidently locked the door to our room with the key, a no no as it is self locking. They had to go through a window in order to open the door but eveyone was really kind about it.
