A great trip and main reason for visiting Tanna. Trip by road was part of the experience. The ash plains and eruptions were magnificent.

Mt Yasur is deservingly the number 1 reason to visit Tanna and the afternoon/evening trip did not disappoint. Definitely heed the advice to wear long trousers/pants,jacket and runners to make yourself comfortable when on the exposed peaks around the top of the volcano.

First time I had to pay to see a volcano (managed by a private company). The entry fee (equivalent to 90$/80€) is a third of the minimum salary in the country!!! It has tripled in the last 2 years. The "show" and the ceremony before going up to the crater made me feel uneasy. You have to go up on 4x4, walking the short trail is "forbidden"… The guides were unable to answer questions like the depth of the craters, the altitude, etc. And they made us leave right at sunset, when it becomes interesting. When asking if I could stay longer, they say "yes if you pay more"!!! Who does benefit from the money? Definitely not the local tribe! Business is on in Tanna!
