Wow, what a fantastic tour, absolutely awesome to see the power of Mother Nature so close! The main purpose of us visiting Tanna Island was to see the volcano, Mt Yasur - something that had been on my husband's bucket list for some years.

The drive from our hotel took 1½ hours to the Welcome village. We made two stops on the way, one to view the volcano sending up great clouds of smoke at a distance, and the second to see the lunar-like landscape created by the ash and debris thrown out by eruptions. We eventually arrived at the Welcome to Mt Yasur HQ and were greeted by the guides, drivers and assistants all dressed in their brightly coloured uniforms, who were to take us up to the volcano. They treated us to a Welcome ceremony, tribal dancing and acceptance ceremony of us by the tribal chief. Then we set off in convoy of around eight vehicles and drove via a narrow rocky road to the next "lunar landing". We left the vehicles and walked up a fairly steep concreted path (about 50-60 metres) to the viewing path. All the time we could hear the roaring and booming of Mt Yasur as it continued throwing rocks and smoke into the air. Once on the viewing path, we could see right down into the glowing crater. As eruptions became imminent, the volcano roared even louder and shock waves shot up into the air before the mountain belched forth more molten lava and rocks. When dusk fell and it got darker the eruptions became more spectacular as we could see all the glowing lava thrown up by night that we couldn't see in the daylight. Around 6.30pm our guides, lighting the path with torches, called us down – time to go. We returned to the Welcome village where refreshments had been prepared for us, following which we jumped into our vehicles and were driven the 1½ hours back to our hotel.

If you are thinking of holidaying in Vanuatu, take a couple of days and visit Tanna to see the volcano - Fire Island the locals call it - you won't be disappointed, it’s an awesome experience.

Everything was really well organised and on time. The flight with Air Taxi was so much fun, Sam was an awesome pilot and super friendly, really recommend him. Made our group feel very safe in such a small plane!
Great trip to the volcano, not to be missed when in Vanuatu. Never heard anything so powerful as that volcano rumble! Amazing experience and the accommodation was also fab - right on a black sand beach :)

OMG!!! This is surely a bucket list must-do for anyone with a slight sense of adventure and interest in nature. Nowhere else in the world can you get so up close and person to a very active, molten lava erupting volcano. The trip is very safely organised and supervised by the local village who live daily in the shadow of the 'Ol Man' as they affectionately called their rumbling mountain.

Our family of four (2A and 2C (8 and 11)) travelled to the Volcano on a day where it was rated 2 out of 4 (no tours if 3 or 4). Booked our tour via Whitegrass Resort which was pricey but we did expect this as it's the main reason we went to Tanna. After a very bumpy 1.5 hour ride in the back of the 4WD we arrived to be greeted by guides. A quick welcome ceremony performed by locals before driving the 10 mins to the rim. A steep walk to the viewing area with lots of steps but there was no rush. Both our kids and older people managed it well. A further 10 min walk to the rim to view the lava explosions. OMG - so spectacular. You could feel the earth move before the lava exploded out the top. Lots of ash clouds but didn't fall on us. Smell of sulphur was present but not over powering. The kids bought a postcard and posted it in the mail box so hopefully will make it back to Melbourne! A little windy and cold on the rim so take a jacket. Torches are provided to make the walk back down safe once the sun has set. A truly memorable experience. Yes - it is expensive but considering the memories you'll have well worth it.
