“A place that looks after their guests!”
Reviewed 12 January 2012

We stayed at Tanna Lodge for 2 nights and we enjoyed the friendly service provided by Stella and her family from the start to the end of our stay. We were picked up by their friendly driver/local guide, Sam at the airport, who also introduced us to the island on the way while stopping at certain spots upon our request to take photos and buy things from the off-road markets!

The resort itself is situated on a stretch of black sand beach and our room was pretty much waterfront (which meant dozing off to the sound of waves at night). The only downside with our room was that the bungalow style hut was prone to mosquitoes and other insects which prevented us from having a good night sleep. However, the food was surprisingly tasty and there were no specific times for breakfast. We slept in till 10:30 in the morning and still had breakfast brought out to our table when we sat down!

Our tour to the volcano was also considerately thought out by the staff despite the rainy weather. We still managed to see the volcano, but we were not able to stay to watch the fireworks, which was a bit disappointing. But we considered ourselves lucky given that some visitors left without seeing the volcano because of the wet weather.

Overall it was definitely an enjoyable stay and we would stay again if we were to visit Tanna again!

We stayed at both Whitegrass and Tanna Lodge, so were able to compare the two. Whitegrass was more expensive, was well groomed, etc, but we didnt want to pllay boules, croquet, or pretty ordinary golf. The only swimming was in the pool unless you travelled.
We didnt like the double beds, rooms were clean but unimpressive.
We went to Tanna to experience the island people, the volcano, tourist special sites, and this was what we experiences at Tanna Lodge. The management and staff were absolutely wonderful, the food was great, and Sam and Seth were grear tour guides, and great drivers on those treacherous roads and we felt secure and comfortable. On the downside, little things were missed such as soap, making coffee in the bure......... but we enjoyed the king size beds!!
We had a real Tanna experience and will choose Tanna resort on our next trip.

We stayed for one night at the Tanna Lodge in May 2011. Upon arrival, we saw that the single main common area was filled with people- apparently the hotel has rented itself out as a 'hospitality school,' which left nowhere to sit for lunch for us- the single paying guests for the night. This 'hospitality school' is run by a surly, very rude Australian man who spent our entire stay acting as if the hotel was his private vacation home- he took the best table in the restaurant for himself for all meals, and even had the audacity to ask us, the paying guests, to not sit in 'his' table for breakfast. There was a very small menu at the resort. Additionally, there are no mosquito nets over the beds, despite Tanna being a malarial island, and the few chairs around the pool were either broken, very dirty, or both.

However, our volcano tour (that the hotel arranged through an outside vendor- Big-something or other)- was very good and the onsite manager- Estella- was very helpful, especially when we requested to move to the White Grass Ocean resort, which was the same price and far superior.

Tanna Lodge Resort was the perfect place to have my first Tanna experience. It is a hidden gem, and the staff (particularly the owners Hugh and Stella, and their beautiful kids) ensured that our stay was comfortable and memorable.

My partner and I spent Easter at Tanna Lodge, and we were subjected to a wonderful Vanuatu style buffet. It will be something that we will always remember. I will also remember the day trip that was organised last minute for myself and my partner, and another couple. We even had a packed lunch made especially for us!

I hope to one day be able to return to Tanna Lodge Resort. I have grown quite fond of the place, and I hope that it will greet me again one day like a long lost friend...

My family and I recently spent three nights in Tanna, ideally to visit the volcano and custom villages. Unfortunately rain hindered our access so our tiime was spent at the lodge. We were lucky enough that it is located next door to a local village and we had the joy of watching them go about their daily life, washing, fishing etc. The lodge is relatively new with good individual bungalows, each with own facilities and most importantly, hot water and electricity. There are a couple of family bungalows as well as a pool. The staff are lovely and always more than happy to help. You do have to note that they are local people and you may need to ask rather than expect but once requested, nothing is too much trouble. Our hosts were kind enough to offer us a complimentary drive to one of the closer and more accessible areas to pass the time in the rain.
Food is good with a good selection of wines etc at the bar, an ever improving area. The Lodge does have internet access and reasonable mobile phone reception, quite amazing given its location, although take lots of books to read as no TV. I look forward to our next visit with Stella and her team and hopefully a trip to the volcano.
