Chris and Shane have worked with nature to create this beautiful place. The fales are situated to provide views of the lagoon and the ocean beyond, complete with whales swimming past and amazing sunsets. The natural woodland has been preserved around each site to provide shade and privacy, and we woke up each morning to the sound of the birds. We had the Tree House fale, simple but with everything we needed to self-cater and nicely decorated. Communal areas are well looked after, with a lovely large deck next to the barbecue and a covered deck next to the office with lots of local information. Good snorkelling - very clear water - just through the garden gate and though we don't surf, we enjoyed watching surfers outside the reef and paddleboarders out in the lagoon.
Chris's fish platters feature fantastic freshly caught mahimahi or tuna and scrummy tropical salad. The shop and museum are also well worth a visit.
Chris and Shane are immensely welcoming, full of local knowledge and quietly proud to share what is actually their home with us. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend Blue Banana to anyone who enjoys peace and tranquility in an unspoiled environment.
Any downside? Tongan midges/mosquitos LOVE palani ( foreigners) and are silent biters. Coils and tablets are provided but take repellent and bug spray!

we are a family of 4 and spent 12 days with blue banana. Chris and Shane are perfect host's giving you all the local info essential to getting the most from your holiday. we literally rocked up and planned our whole itinery on the first day with Chris's guidance. to be able to walk 50m and be snorkling on a tropical beach with no resorts or big hotels in sight ( or the people that they would attract) is what you come to tonga for and the location of blue banana couldn't be a better example.google "blue banana whales " there is some great drone footage of a whale and her calf in front of blue banana.

We spent two wonderful weeks at Blue
Banana this August We TOTALLY endorse
all the previous glowing reviews on Trip Advisor.
The place is beautiful. Great beach for swimming
and snorkeling. Its tidal but even an hour or two either
side of low tide its still possible to have a dip and all the other hours
a proper swim. We stayed in the Maui and loved
the simplicity the facilities are basic and comfortable
with all we needed to self cater. We brought some basic
supplies with us but the markets are great for
fresh produce and small supermarket had the staples.
The bus to town is close by and easy and gives a chance to see more
of the landscape surrounding. We could see still heaps
of repair work going on both on buildings and farming,
after Cyclone Gita
The legendary fish platters are memorable with
the freshest fish we ever ate if you like sashimi
dont bother cooking it! As all have said before us,
Chris and Shane are awesome hosts. Not only
going out of their way to make the stay wonderful
but because they have lived in Tonga for over 30
years have heaps of local knowledge. Vai is gracious
and helpful in every way.
We could rave on and on but for us the most
important aspect of Blue Banana that makes it unique
is its integrity in keeping the place small, basic, and simple.
If you want the usual “resort culture” rampant around the
Pacific ie : pools, bars, being waited on
hand and foot (by severely underpaid locals
while expats owners cream it and the environment is destroyed),
then this is not the place for you. But if you want
the real “luxuries” of sun, ocean, swimming, whales breaching
in front of your door ( bring binoculars and enjoy from your own
deck at Blue Banana instead of joining the tourist boats
that harass the whales ) quiet starry nights, sunsets
simple diy /self catering low key but comfortable
accomodation, then this is the place to stay.
We will be back next year. Thanks Blue Banana for
the best holiday ever.

Shane and Chris could not be better. We have been three times and the it gets better each time. I enjoying sharing a drink and chat with Shane and Chris and hope to be back again. Got fresh fruit from town and cooked most of our own meals. The culture show is a highlight.

Room Tip: Bring food with you and wine if you drink it. It is a long way into town and you really don't want to leave the beach.
