Stayed here with my husband, my sister,& my sister's boyfriend for a couple nights before our 6 day trek through Patagonia. The staff there, spoke English, were very friendly, helpful, & informative. Breakfast was simple, but got the job done. Rooms & bathroom were very clean & comfortable! I loved having no television in the rooms, for it reminded us to just relax & get away from technology once and awhile. I would definitely stay here again & would recommend it to family and friends.

We spent 5 nights at Nothofagus and found the staff to be very helpful and friendly and the place is very clean.

Breakfast was ample. There is no restaurant but an eating area to bring your own food. The staff gave us hot water, cutlery and plates when we came to eat food we had bought at lunchtime.

The lunch box to take on the trek was generous and tasty, $AR150, option of a salad roll and rice salad or two salad rolls, with a piece of fruit and some lollies, you must order it before 8pm the night before so they can prepare it.

It is close to the start of the laguna torre trek path which was amazing.

We were two couples in rooms 3 and 4, one of the shared bathrooms is adjacent so we had that pretty much to ourselves and a lounge area also. It was wonderfully quiet and we slept well. Excellent shower.

We loved our time there, would recommend it and stay there again.

Rooms with shared bathroom are very small with little space to unpack or stand up straight. The double bed is actually a large single. Partition walls are thin so you can hear people in next room as if they were in your room. Rooms with private bathrooms are slightly bigger and have better headroom but beds are still tiny. Breakfast is meagre but packed lunches are very good. There are other much better places to stay in El Chalten for a similar price that do not demand payment in cash.

Since we booked all our accommodation through an agency it is hard to make a comparison based on price paid however I think this is key as your experience will always boil down to perceived value for money. Without that market to guide I'm going to have to review solely on whether I would return and whether I got w good nights sleep.

Unfortunately the answer to both is no. We were in room 1 right by reception and we could hear everything from people talking, the receptionist answering the phone, guests coming in and out, down the stairs, moving upstairs. This meant that we were unable to go to sleep until everyone else in the B&B had settled for the night and we were up with the first risers.

On top of that our toilet cistern was broken so it was constantly flowing. We told reception but nothing was done about it so we ended up having to bodge it ourselves.

Worst of all however is that every time the guests in room 2 went to the toilet to do a number 2 we could smell it (and hey just have had a dodgy tummy as it was often and it stank!!).

Although the staff were friendly they weren't particularly helpful. We arrived on the 9pm bus and were told we couldn't order a lunch box for the next day as it was too late. Considering there is a 8am bus and a 9pm they should be able to cater for people arriving wanting a lunch box for the only thing that can be done in Chalten: walk!

That being said we did get a nice view of Mount Fitz Roy whilst having breakfast on the first morning (the one and only time we would see it!)

I always ask myself the same question, would I go back? No, i'd try a different place.

The staff was very friendly and attentive and even let us leave our things there to store while we trekked for a few days. Breakfast was delectable with some of the best cheese and rolls I had in Argentina. The rooms were spotless and cozy. Water was hot and reliable. Will definitely stay there again, but book ahead, this place is a steal!

Room tip: Very accessible to town and trails
