“There’s a Red House Over Yonder”

The Red House ( Tigh Dearg) on the Isle of Harris is a converted traditional self-catering cottage for couples. Alisdair and Tracey have lovingly restored this property into a luxurious secret escape. There is a kitchen diner and a comfortable lounge area with a sublime reclining sofa in front of a log burner for those days and nights when there is a wee chill in the air. A spacious wet room is also situated on the ground floor. The upstairs area is light and airy with stunning views and natural light from the Velux windows, with two well placed chairs and a king size bed it is a perfect chill out area. The cottage décor is tastefully done and there are many accomplished art works and needlework by Tracey located around the rooms and not forgetting Alisdair’s wonderful iron work and carpentry throughout the cottage. There is an interesting photo album in the upstairs lounge area which provides details of the original Blackhouse cottage renovation. You can see from the images the hard work and attention to detail which has gone into making the Red House so exceptional. The views from the cottage are stunning and we were very lucky with the weather during our stay in May 2016 as temperatures hit 26 degrees with only few days of rain over our 2 week stay. During this warm spell Alisdair kindly supplied 2 welcome deck chairs so we could relax and enjoy the views. As you can see from my images, the cottage is situated about 100 metres from where you park your car along a stone pathway. As we had 2 weeks of supplies, clothing and camera gear a trusty wheel barrow seemed to be the practical way to ship our luggage up to the cottage. There is a feeling of remoteness and tranquillity at this property but it was always good to know that Tracey and Alisdair were on hand if needed with friendly advice but were never intrusive. The welcome gift of local produce and bottle of fizz was very much appreciated. There are some lovely walks from the cottage where you can roam the coast line where Grey Seals, Otters and various sea birds can be seen. We saw Golden Eagles over the cottage and a White Tailed Eagle was seen heading towards the island of Sgeotasaigh. The Grey Seals like to sleep on the rocks just down from the cottage and can be viewed at low tide. There is a path which takes you to Tarbert and it takes about half an hour to reach the town. The Red House is ideally situated for visiting places like Luskentyre beach and The North Harris Eagle Observatory. And if you fancy an excellent fish dish, the North Harbour Bistro at Scalpay is excellent. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Alisdair, Tracey, Molly and Lester for a wonderful stay at their excellent cottage and we look forward to coming back sometime in the future.

“Perfect Retreat”

What a great little place in an ideal location!

From the upstairs window you can see the seals in the water, a short walk along the peninsular and we were lucky enough to see sea otters!

The house is beautifully finished with everything you need.

“Exceptional in every way”
Reviewed 31 July 2015 for a stay in July 2015

We loved the Red House. It is an old building that has been beautifully renovated with great care and attention to detail. Very comfortable and well equipped with a lovely homely atmosphere. Bedroom on a mezzanine floor. Very modern wet room downstairs.
Great location - near Tarbert and the ferry from Uig. Not far from the main road but the last part is a fairly rough track ( but once we had done it a couple of times it was fine). Then a walk up a footpath from the parking place. So not suitable for anyone with mobility problems.
All of this makes it seem more remote than it actually is. Sheep all around. Seals cavorting in the bay. A great place to relax and unwind. We loved it and wish we were still there!

“Beautiful, awe-inspiring setting, artistically crafted and well appointed cottage for two”
Reviewed 20 July 2015 for a stay in July 2015

We just spent a week at the Red House near Tarbert on the Isle of Harris and couldn't have been happier with our accommodations. A former "Black House" that was totally redesigned and modernized by its owners Alisdair and Tracey to become a terrific cottage for two with excellent "feng shui" and views of the surrounding bay and rock encrusted hills of Harris. Alisdair is the master carpenter and metal worker who redesigned and re-built the cottage. Tracey, his wife, is an exceptionally talented artist whose water colors and needle work depicting the surrounding scenery make the interior of the cottage a delight. A telescope on the upper floor looks out onto the bay where seals can be seen during the day hauled up on a small island. Within a few minutes drive is the town of Tarbert where supplies can be had. A lovely welcome package of fresh eggs, prosecco, bread and butter, and hot chocolate awaited us on arrival. The Red House is highly recommended for your visit to Harris.
