East Rhidorroch is a truly magical place. Our entire group was captivated by it. The children (ranging from 4 to 12) loved the freedom and space and participated with huge enthusiasm in swimming and river-racing on inflatables (Iona kindly lent us her unicorn!), fishing from the boat and the bank, long walks up the beautiful glens , marshmallow roasts etc. The lodge itself is a glorious step back in time. We all loved tending the stove and setting the fires. The furnishings are both elegant and homely and made all the more special by being largely unchanged since the lodge was build in the 1920's. Iona and Julien are the perfect hosts. Always on-hand, helpful and friendly, but never intrusive. We'll definitely be back.
We loved this place despite the fact that we weren't able to use it to its full potential. This is an 18th century hunting lodge that was acquired by the grandfather of Iona, who lives on site and runs the organic farm with her partner. Julien. This clearly is a labor of love for them.
The drive from Ullapool to the lodge is as scenic as you could hope for, but be prepared to contend with a narrow dirt/stone road, cows, sheep, and cattle gates as you follow the loch and then the river that flows through the glen. The drive is worth it alone, and we were able to do so without 4-wheel drive. We were greeted by three horses, dogs, a suspension bridge over the river, and wheelbarrows to tote our stuff through the compound to the lodge, which is on the far side with views across a stone-enclosed field that is bordered by a crag.
The lodge is fully equipped with everything we needed except for WiFi, which provided a welcome respite. We purchased lamb from their farm, which we grilled the first night. The next two nights, we made arrangements with Iona's brother-in-law for fresh brown crab, langostines, and lobsters. As you can tell, we ate in.
The lodge accommodates 10 people, so much was left empty, and there were rooms we never used, such as the dining room and the "lounge," which was replete with a billiard table (with torn felt) and many a deer hear mounted on the wall.
Unfortunately, we didn't have time to stroll the surrounding crags and glen as we wanted to explore the surroundings of Ullapool. If we were to stay at the lodge again, I'd want a week, not just three nights.
This place is rustic, so if you're looking for high-end comfort, this isn't for you. We found it to be very accommodating, beautiful, melancholic, and rejuvenating. I hope to visit again.
We stayed as a family group in the traditional comfortable lodge. The fact there was no TV, mobile or wifi was a bonus and our early teens became human again. Plenty to do walking, cycling, fishing (we brought rods), badminton, swimming or just plain relaxing. Our hosts were great and lovely to chat with, warm, welcoming and helpful with information. Their knowledge of the area is great. My daughter and I enjoyed "helping" Iona and Julian on their farm. We could easily have stayed on another two weeks. We explored further afield too and barely scratched the surface of what there is to explore. Beautiful part of our country.
When we booked Rhidorroch Lodge as a group of 9 we really didn't know what to expect, but all I can say that it's the best holiday we've had by far! Stunning location, miles from anywhere, no wifi or mobile signal so you really get to benefit from a "digital detox" ! The 5 kids were never bored all week, swimming in the river, hiking in the hills and having loads of fun with the dogs, sheep and not forgetting the unicorn! Iona and Julien made us feel so welcome and we've taken away some very special memories (including the mandolin/guitar session accompanied with fine single malt!) We will definitely return again in the near future!
