“Why No washing machine!!”
Reviewed 14 August 2013 for a stay in August 2013

Although the location is great the lack of washing machine is bizarre - it is sitting unused under the stairs - we desperately needed this as were on a 2 week stay working for the Forestry Commission so needed fresh clothes each day x 2 people after long hard days outside working in the heat ...- I am sure walkers and mountain bikers would need the same!!! The cottage description v cleverly omits whether or not there is a washing machine (you assume there is as it has everything else) & we feel it should be made clear as this is a basic item not a luxury ! Also the cooker and fridge need a good clean - oven so full of dried fat etc that the smoke alarm went off every time we used it! So Assume other reviewers didnt do any proper cooking! A few other key items missing eg. no weighing scales so had to guess amounts for making pastry and scones! Sorry but overall the cottage is reasonable not fantastic.

Hi
Thank you for your review. Just to clarify - you stayed at the cottage for one week and not two as your review would imply.
We prioritised installing a new dishwasher over a washing machine as we felt that guests would not want to spend their time washing dishes. However we have also bought a new washing machine and intend to find a suitable location and instal as soon as we can, as we know guests would also like this facility. We did not try to hide the fact that there is not a washing machine at the property - it is simply not listed as one of the facilities available - you can just list what is available and not what isn't available! If a washing machine was essential for your stay it may have been an idea to enquire before hand.
I thought I had supplied everything necessary in the kitchen but you are right there were no kitchen scales - we have now added these to the kitchen equipment available.
Oven - the oven was thoroughly cleaned with oven cleaner before your arrival as it is before every guests arrival - I can only assume that there was a little cooking fat splashed on the grill elements which may have caused it to smoke a litte - so sorry about that.

“Not what I expected”
Reviewed 17 June 2013 for a stay in June 2013

First of all can I say that the facilities within the house are extremely good, the decor is good but when we arrived I was looking forward to walking from the rear gate into the wood as the pictures on the website shows. Unfortunately this was not possible. The pictures were extremely misleading in as much as in our opinion that has not been possible for several years given that there were several badly fallen trees and extremely high grass surrounding them blocking the path. We did try to get through but it was impossible for fear of falling.
When we went into the house I was appalled to see considerable cooking grease residue in the stainless steel sink, washing up bowl and plastic drainer; so before I could do anything I had to clean it. I then went to the shower room only to find that the sink had soap residue around the inside of the sink and strands of hair. The shower base had a dried mud footprint on the base together with soap residue and again strands of dark hair. The toilet had urine on the upside of the seat and arount the top of the bowl, not very nice. Again I set to to clean it - not at all what I expected to have to do.
There was a baby stair gate at the bottom of the stairs which we were going to close to ensure that our dog did not go upstairs unfortunately the gate was coming away from the wall so we didn't us it.
The website also said that the garden was secure unfortunately that was not the case the main gate did not shut unless you put a stone behind it consequently we could not let our dog into the garden as we had wanted to for fear of her getting out of the garden.
There was also a large gas storage tank on the patio which could be a danger if someone smoked and the tank was not shown on any pictures.

A suggestion for the owner - the decking at the back door is slippy when the weather is wet and as there are two steps which you might not see we suggest that the edges of each step is highlighted.
Also I suggest that there is a lightweight duvet in the property for personal choice as not everyone want a thick one when the weather is warmer.

I have contacted the owner and she says she has noted my comments

Hi
Thank you for your 3 night stay and for your review of the cottage.
In response:
1. The forest behind the house is the property of the Forestry Commission. The pictures on the website were taken in the winter - forests look very different depending on the season. Having the forest at the back of the house provides great seclusion, peace and quiet and we feel that it is a nice aspect to the property. There is access to the forest from the garden but not for walks - the kids have used it for building dens, playing in and making paths and bridges over the stream etc. As per the info folder in the house there are walks within one minute of the house into the forest (e.g. to the white Cairn - out of the cottage left and then left at the new cottage being built) You can also walk directly from the house , across the road and follow the forest path to Glentrool forest trails/ mountain biking.
2.LPG Tank - we do not feel the need to profile this on the website - this is simply the form of central heating used in many rural areas where there is no mains gas supply. You will see these tanks in many properties around the area and they are of no concern or danger. If any one wishes to smoke - there are plenty of areas both at the front and the back of the cottage to do so.
3. Stair gate - a screw had come lose and the gate was slightly away from the wall. It could still be used. However this is now secured.
4. Back Gate - The back garden is secure and other guests who have brought dogs have commented on this. (Our dog has never got out of the back garden). The door had been left open before your arrival and had been banging in the wind as a result of this it was harder to close than it should have been - sorry. This has now been fixed and the garden is very much enclosed and very private.
5. Duvet - there is a lightweight duvet in the cottage - however I had not put it on the bed yet. Due to the warm weather it is now on the bed. (everyone has different opinions on the duvets they prefer).
6. Bathroom - I apologise for the fact that the bathroom was not as clean as it should have been. I normally clean the property myself so know that it is always spotless for our guests. On this occasion I asked someone else to do it - they have said that in their rush to watch rugby!although they had thoroughly cleaned the rest of the house they forgot to go back and finish cleaning the bathroom. This will definitely not happen again.
7. Decking - there are 2 steps at the back door of the cottage made of decking. Although decking can be slippery - there is a rubber mat on the top step and a light at the back door.
