Built by the first king of Romania, Carol I as his summer home, this castle and the guest house he built for his heir apparent nephew, Ferdinand, are both worth a visit. Fabulous grounds. Great vistas. Interesting tour. A must while in Romania. Hire a guide if in Bucharest and let them do the driving and be your tour guide.

Not really what many would think of as a castle, Peles was a grand residence of the royal family. What's so unique is the condition of the castle, along with the extensive collection of furniture and accessories inside. The wood paneling throughout is amazing. They must have kept all local artisans working for months! It truly is a fantastic place to visit, beginning with the views of it while walking up from the parking area. Just be prepared. It's one of the busiest places in Romania for tourism. On Sunday we arrived not long after opening, and it was already crowded. By the time we left, it was a sea of humanity outside. Be prepared for the wait. You have to visit with a tour, but when you see all the pieces inside, it's easy to understand. There would be no way to control access to all of the valuables if individuals could just walk through. Plus, the tour groups keep people moving. I shudder to think how long a visit would take without the guides. Our guide was excellent, and we had time to look and ask questions from start to finish.

Before I start - be warned; this place is very popular and crowded. The tour parties are pushed through quickly so whilst you are being told about a room, another party is coming in!
However having said that, the castle is quite photogenic especially the outside and the views over the surrounding countryside are lovely.
Building work started in 1875 and it is designed in the Germanic style with half timbering, fairy tale turrets, galleries and statues.Inside there is a lot of carved wood, be it wood panelling on the walls or architraves around and on the doors. This can seem rather overbearing and certainly some of the rooms were very gloomy even with the lights on! If you want to take photos inside there is a 32 lei fee by the way! The rooms are lavishly furnished and we were told that this was the first place in Romania with central heating and electric lighting. The bathrooms adjacent to the royal bedrooms contain all the modern conveniences that you would expect to find in a modern hotel but in a very grand style!
Well worth a visit but you aren't allowed to linger to look more closely at things on display!

Once again spent the morning bring brought around the grounds of these castles. The day itself was beautiful which made going around the grounds even more enjoyable. The views are stunning and going at the end of October meant you get to enjoy all the wonderful autumn colours. Worth a visit if in the area.
