On a Road Scholar tour some of our group walked thru the park on the way to the Territorial prison. As we had an appointment with a docent, we didn't spend much time in the park. It's in an interesting location along the Colorado River under a freeway. I wish we could have stayed longer & enjoyed it more.

My wife and I stumbled upon Gateway Park as we were trying to find the Yuma Territorial Prison. It is a very nice park located on the Colorado River wetlands with California across from Arizona. There are two bridges, one for vehicles and one for trains, overhead and above the park. Downstream of the entrance and parking lot are trails and places for hikers to explore. There seemed to be many families with young children enjoying the very nice park. It looked to me like parking could be an issue on a busy weekend.

Previously my husband and I have just driven by Gateway Park. This weekend we had the opportunity to float down the Colorado River with 10 friends in various water floats after launching from Gateway Park. What a really great city park!!!!! So sorry it took us almost 3 years to learn this. There's a wonderful kiddie playground. Great parking areas, nice landscaping. Awesome family park. However please be advised that there are deep areas in various parts of this river so non-swimmers beware!!!!

We ventured both directions in this Park to check out the sites along the river. We especially enjoyed our walk to the North under the bridge along the banks or the river. A historic trail that is easy to walk on. Although it says on the sign that horses are allowed here we did not see them or any sign that they had been there in the most recent past.

It was a beautiful day and the birds were all around us as we walked.
