“Helpful and fun stop”

North Mountain Visitors Center
Reviewed 6 April 2018 via mobile

We had a late start this morning, so stopped by the visitor center for suggestions on a short and manageable walk with two young children. Super helpful and friendly staff! We got some quick recommendations and a map and were on our way. We stopped by again upon finishing our 1-2 mile hike. Great little gift shop with a nice assortment of books, jewelry and some shirts/ hats. My children read some books at their small library and were rewarded with mineral stones for every book read. We relaxed in their patio area and viewed many species of birds and signs describing the different mountains/ buttes. Used the clean bathrooms and purchased a few drinks on our way out. Helpful and fun nature center.

Here you can get nearby trail information, view several interactive displays, peruse a huge selection of related books for sale (about the area, rocks, plants, and children's books), relax in the library/reading room, buy a snack and a hat to protect you from the sun, and a T-Shirt to remember your time in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. They also sell beautiful jewelry, most of which features rocks or gems, or a southwest design, and which is often made by talented volunteers. The jewelry is what you would see in tourist shops in Scottsdale, but at lower costs and with no sales tax. Twice a month there are Saturday mornings with live music, free coffee and breakfast treats, and a lively crowd of like-minded people who love the preserve. Check the website for dates and details. There are other special events, and the rooms in the beautiful and modern center are available to rent for your private gatherings. Oh, and if you have a little one, they have a rock star reading program. When your child reads a children's book in the reading room they receive a rock for their rock collection.
