Located just off Tomar's main square on a pedestrian-only street, Residencial Luz is perfectly located for exploring all of Tomar's sights. The hotel is in an old, yet charming building that was once a private home (+/- 200 years ago). There is a lively restaurant downstairs along with several other restaurants and cafes within no more than 50 meters from the front door. My room faced the pedestrian street but did not suffer from any noise at night as most places shut down by 10pm. I had a queen bed, armoire, small table and chairs, two night stands and private bathroom. Although somewhat dated, everything was spotless and there is daily housekeeping. The manager David is an affable young man who is a great source of information about Tomar. One word of caution, however...I used a popular booking website to secure my room for which I later found out I paid about 20% more. I have been in Portugal and Spain for the better part of two months and this 'booking fee' was by far the most I have ever encountered - most places I stayed offered rates that were either the same as booking sights or within no more than 5% of the quoted hotel rate. Needless to say, this did not sit well with me, hence my 3-star rating. Would I stay here again if I found myself in Tomar - the answer is yes, although I would contact the hotel directly or try my luck and show up without a reservation.

Directly on the central pedestrian street, but it is an advantage: difficult parking and noisy at night.
Rooms without air conditioning, hot, very small, old.
Bathroom very small, windowless, dirt and old.
No elevator and rooms on the second floor.
Normal staff, but not very sociable.
Economic, without breakfast.

Located just off of the Praca da Republica in Tomar, Residencial Luz offers basic accommodation for budget-minded travellers. I wasn't expecting much for 32.50 Euros for a double ensuite...and didn't get much, either, but most travellers in this region will be happy with clean (but old) beds, a tiny (but fully functional) bathroom, and pleasant staff for a budget price. Rooms aren't exactly clean, and the interior of the residencial is pretty shabby, but the property does have its own odd charm that goes some way to dispel the feeling that you're staying in a flophouse.

The location of the hotel really can't be beat, as it's just off of the town's main square and within a 1/2 hour walk of all of the town's major points of interest. Front-facing rooms have lovely views of the Praca (and, if you turn your head, the ramparts of the Convento) and the streets below; back rooms are quieter, which is something to consider given the fact that street noise interrupted our sleep until 0200 on a Sunday evening.

Hotel staff speak adequate English and were very helpful and accommodation. This residencial does, however, only accept cash.
